Actually, you can say that many features of the 4k, 5k, JJ OS came from real full fledged samplers of the past.
The MPC sampler has never been a strong sampler historically. It gets the job done for most needs, but compared to rack samplers like Akai S series, E-mu racks, and Ensoniq boards, it has always been pretty weak. All that keygroup, global editing, etc comes from older samplers.
Anyone who owns an Ensoniq sampler (eps/asr) would consider all these features old news.
This is why people coupled the S series racks with the mpc/sp1200 for so long. They just have wayyy more flexibility than being a simple "phrase" or drum sampler.
