There is nothing to unlearn.
Even if I was strapped for cash there are 2 things I would still find counter productive.
One is the rackmount version of a keyboard and the other is using a computer for the creation of music.
Of course they are usable tools just not my choice except when neccessary or the only option.

I have both hardware and soft synths but until I can use the VI's without the computer having to sit between creativity and result, hardware still wins.

Now back to topic.
Unless JJ can seriously optimize the os, XL is heading in a dangerous direction which makes the concept of an OS2 tweak seem like a good choice.
Adding some the asked for functions to XL might be just enough to make the unit stall even more?

Otherwise as Nym has stated you will need to let the computer pick up the slack.

As for me I have simply learned that traveling with a 4k isn't as bad as I thought since it handles the task without missing a beat.

which is why "add a f*cking pc or other external hardware blah blah blah" IS part of the conversation regarding mpc1000/2500 bog-down. my earlier posts made it quite clear that the point was "share the burden"

sooty - i stand by my post that ccs don't require any ADDITIONAL onboard processing, unlike the qreals. even recording blank notes at every tick on alternating bars an empty INST pgm w/ nothing in ram played back at 180 bpm will probably cause the mpc to buckle. when it comes down to it there's a limit of what it can do - however, you could send a lot more ccs out than you could record qreal in.

The original post was about if people had seen their 1k/2500 bog down with JJ OS.
The comments about using a PC were pretty much off topic in that regard.

you live up to your name dont you

What works for you is based on the path you have walked

i say again: you must unlearn what you have learned glasshoppa

not because its better

sounds subjective to me, especially in light of what nym is able to do with it

Thanks for the responses everyone. So in summary:

- Filter 2 really does take some juice to run (I was skeptical)
- Massive amounts of MIDI data can cause issues
- Nym is making Virtual Music
- THE ADVERSARY is true to his name

This may be a bit off topic, but this thread seems to have gone in several directions allready. I have worked with hardware from the start. A few years ago I tried to get into software just to check it out. I hate computers due to their freezing issues etc, but I thought it would be a good idea to at least see what it was all about. Once I did get a few very basic programs, I hooked up my controller and the latency issue put an end to my computer music making right away. I honestly dont even remember what I was using as a controller. I guess what I'm asking is where is a good place to start? I have always learned on my own, as I don't know anyone off of the internet who shares my interest in MIDI and sampling.

Basically, I just want to start from scratch. I don't want to spend any money, at first, as I have put in enough for now. I have a PC with plenty of RAM and an Emu 0404 soundcard. I just really need to know how to set up my Fantom X as a controller and adjust the settings to deal with any latency issues. I'd love to be able to play with some of the many VST instruments available. As for computer music making, I am a complete newbie. I find the stuff simply too frustrating to deal with, so if this is too much... I understand. Just looking for an aesy way in to learn, and move up gradually.

thats just fine... are you using xp? because my advice would hinge on that.

http://www.musicxp.net/dnn/Default.aspx

go to that website and register. then complete all of the tuning tips.

you need a utility that will clean your computer of temporary files, like window washer.

you need a utility that will correct windows registry entries that are in error

you need a good defragmentation tool, and to use it regularly.

some of this is stuff that you really need to have someone to ask about, so if you have questions, email me and ill send you my skype name or my aim name so we can talk.

you need to set your buffer size on your asio driver to the minimum possible without crackles.

once you have done all of this you should have a much better time at using software.
