os2 on the fence

Ive had simular issues with tempo change after swift movements of buttons etc

for me, jj os took a turn for the worse with os2 and xl. It lost some things that make an mpc an mpc (4 velocity layers, changing tracks in record mode, etc.). I have 2 and xl but use the original jj os version 3.16 (older) exclusively because it has the ability to mute and unmute loops and that nice little pad mode feature.

good point, thats exactly why i wanted to start this thread, I didnt realize the whole changing tracks in record mode thing. thats huge minus for me.

I like OS1..I tried OS2..almost felt like I had to relearn the MPC over again, but I figured it out. In the end, I went back to OS1 because there was almost too much that I didn't need in the "upgraded" os's...actually, there's a lot I don't use in OS1...besides the added filters, normalize, and resampling, I pretty much use the 2500 like my old 2000XL.
But there are a few things I would like to see, but unfortunately, an OS can't handle it. I'm looking at the MPC4000 as an upgrade because of one thing: the polyphony. Sampling in stereo results in a much fuller sound. You can always sample in mono, and convert to stereo in your DAW, but for the bump right out the box, stereo sampling works quite well..especially for 2 trackers like myself. I hate tracking out beats!

just for the record the mpc60 and thempc 3000 didnt have velocity layers... I cant remeber if the 2000 did, so ill check. Os1 is without doubt an improvement on the akai os. Os2 is an improvement with some minor comprimizes.os2xl is a user preference between features.

I started with a 2000xl and it definitely had velocity layers, but point taken on earlier models.

i bought OS 2 over a year ago and never use it.

non-destructive chop is not worth the loss of a second filter.

dunno if it's worth copping XL.

When I was using, I liked 3.08, but one HUGE advantage of OS1 is DIRECT RECORD!!! dont know if its in os2 or xl tho

The second filter is back in os2xl.

You actually CAN change tracks while recording but it's a little awkward.

Go to the track mute screen, hit Active (F4) and then press the pad corresponding to the track you want to record on. There should be a solid border around it instead of a dotted one.

Get off the fence. Don't hold your breath for an updated OSXL. Try OS2, it has XOX style step seguencing and real-time loop editing in the grid OSXL and OS1 don't

instrument programs & pitch envelopes in OS2 swung it for me. Features that make the mpc more like a 'keyboard' sampler: best of both worlds.
