How I would like it to work is for the release stage to kick in after the sample reaches the end of playback and then as it loops around the release can fade out the filter at a different rate than the amp stage. This is how the amp envelope works in oneshot mode.
I guess I'll just have to use note on and hold the pad like I have nothing better to do.
FWIW, this is how it's "supposed" to work with a traditional ADSR. Sustain only kicks in if you are still holding the key, and release doesn't kick in until you release the key. What would be really tight, not just for loops but also for drum hits, is if JJ added a "hold" stage between attack and decay. AHDSR or just AHD on oneshots.
