so that's that.
i'm giving serious thought about going back to OS 2 now.

i don't like the fact that JJ is not a musician, yet making decisions about how my musical instrument operates. we have to face the reality that JJ does not make money by supporting and bug-fixing code - he makes it by introducing novelty: new features that you have to pay for to get.

this wouldn't be a problem except he is dealing with a closed box: the MPC has very little room for codespace and no way to upgrade the hardware. so as he keeps adding features to insure his income stream, he has to keep taking away other things. as a programmer and not a musician (and also motivated by his need to keep his cashflow going), his decisions are a little suspect.

it's when he takes away CORE features of the MPC ( Q-LINK recording, Q-REAL edit, and MIXER AUTOMATION for gods sakes! ) in order to bring in some new features that have more limited appeal that we run into problems in my opinion.

i don't remember anyone asking for CHORD or ARPEGIATOR mode, EQH & EQL, the little envelope graphs in GPE, sequence rearranging, etc. these are all features that i'm happy to use, but when they come at the expense of some more basic things then forget it.

i'm tired of the constant feature swap, the worrying about what feature will be killed next, the constant loss of compatibility with old projects... you get used to a way of working and then have to re-adjust everything when JJ pulls something out. if that's what he's going to do then he needs to make the OS MODULAR! have a list of available features, you pick the ones that are important to you, and then you get the OS made. or maybe have 3 different versions of the current OS available (with the current features) that we can choose from. maybe people would buy more than one version and JJ would even end up making more money that way.

i'm willing to bet any one of us uses the MPC to make music FAR more than JJ does ( if at all ). the artists should be the ones steering the development of the tool. but right now it's JJ's way or the highway. OS 2XL came out of nowhere and it was take it or leave it. in my opinion he's giving bells and whistles while taking away solid fundamentals.

XL hands down!

and yo its DOPE to see NYM on the board now. When I first joined and was goin heavy on here, Nym was MIA.. glad to see him back, as from what I read he was a truly valuable asset to the mpc community.

Nice to see ya round Nym.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I see there's over 800 views, but only 30 votes and a dozen comments? Come on, there's hundreds if not 1000s of JJ users on this forum - does this mean only 30 people are interested in the book :?

Are there any specific tutorials people would like included?

XL.

OS1 is quite easy to learn. I started on OS1 with no prior experience on MPCs, the differences compared to Akai OS were not that big. I think anybody could learn it with the Book (and there's the Stan Steez manual still available somewhere, I hope), I don't really see a need for a new manual.

OS2 is more complex and somewhat different from XL. I don't know really, I tried it briefly before going XL. It seems to me (and I might be wrong) that there are not that many new OS2 users - most go straight to XL. OS2 isn't supported by JJ any more, and the old users don't really need any new manuals, they've done the hard work themselves studying the JJ manuals. I guess.

So XL it is. It is the deepest OS, and some features are not that easy to grasp, not just for beginners but for more advanced users too. I agree with Nym, a tutorial on GPE would be great.

Other topics I'd like to see:
- NDC. That's one feature I never explored.
- Multi timbre. How to use it with different hardware configurations, external controllers, synths and such.
- how to use other expanded Midi control options.
- examples of live performance workflows (not just studio production), for example: live looping, using external midi controllers live, integrating MPC to DJ mixers and turntables... There are so many ways to accomplish some tasks on OS-XL, it would actually be nice to see different real-life workflow examples, a series of short tutorials maybe?

It's difficult being specific about areas of the OS I'm less competent with, but I'm sure a lot of the 'basics' could be left out completely.

It'd be nice to have all the shortcuts and workflow enhancers in one section. So many 2500 users don't even know about the numeric key assign for example.

xl, of course.

some topics:

-integrating with other gear using multi timbre, cc, etc.
-integrating with DAW
-possible workflow setup charts, or workflow outlines i.e. vinyl sampler setup, DAW control setup, keyboard producer setup, reason setup, ableton setup, etc.
-GPE + shortcuts : chapter entirely dedicated to the quickest ways to get things done
-NDC - seems like lots of folks simply haven't explored this. this is like the flagship feature for JJOS, i find it crazy people haven't explored it...
-jump start guide for non jjos users: a quick start guide or something to transition from akai to jjos or traditioinal mpc to jjos that includes some kind of chart that compares akai os to jjos but more indepth than the basic feature chart. maybe something to the effect of "on akai mpc2xl you use to do this, now we do this", or "on mpc60, you did this, now on jjos we do this" maybe have charts or screen shots for the some of the main workflow items. (these could even be in the form of side notes or tips thoughout the book, like say chapter is on chopping, you could have several side notes on what was done on mpc2xl, or 4k, and then describe the differance on jjos)

yup,

like a GPE + shortcuts chapter.

there are lots of shortcuts. i still find things that im like "what the hell, can't believe i didn't realize this before"

nym and I started a thread on shortcuts, but it hasn't really been updated. But the info on shortcuts is definately on this forum scattered about. condensing it will be super valuable.

hmm, maybe even something like a "jjos cheat sheet" where its a condensed page full of shortcuts, and info on transitioning to jjos, plus a rundown of all the various things jjos can do and popular questions.

for example, rather than me searching the forums for "how to setup midi to control my motif" I can use the "jjos cheat sheet" and on the cheat sheet is a section on "midi setup for controlling external sound module". like screen shots of exactly what i need to do.

you can pick like some major gear and add it to the cheat sheet. ( motif, protools, ableton, reason, etc.)

for example, today it would have been cool to pull up the cheet sheet, scan it for MSB/LSB and see a mini screen shots on how to do a basic LSB/MSB dump without having to digg in the manual or research on the forum...........I could just find it on the cheat sheet and try it out. of course if i had more in depth questions i could go to forum or manual, or guide, but the cheet sheet would get me 98% there.

just pick shortcuts, and commonly asked questions and condense it into 1 pager. crammed full of info and steps.
