i use tap tempo all the time.

i use it to get an idea of the bpm and then make the necessary changes in the 'bpm' field so its perfect

This is a DJ trick but when tempo matching I generally tend to match by the snares. Kick drums tend to be less precise than snare hits, which generally fall on beats 2 and 4 in a bar. Try tapping the tempo to the snare hits, you might have to double the tempo, but I find it to be very accurate.

Also tap tempo using the button tends to be more difficult for me. I use the jjos to assign the tap tempo to a footswitch.

I just turn tap tempo off.

It's not very accurate to be super useful, and there have been too many times when I've adjusted the quantization, then realized poo, I set it to the wrong thing, so I adjust it again, and WOOP my sequence is like 67.4 bpm.

WOOP.

Isn't the reason that the BPM doesn't average over a massive number of presses (8, 16, etc.) or that it collectively averages (averages over all the pushes done) because during a live performance you might be needing to line up with live musicians? The tempo of the performance may be change rapidly at some point so you wouldn't want it to average over a ton of button presses.

But I guess since there's no BPM-based effects or anything there's probably no reason for short tap tempo averaging..

I think it averages out of 4 hits. at least that's what the manual says.. (I believe)

if you use a bpm counter like this one: http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

it averages out the "total" number of taps of a given session, only resetting itself if there is a large pause (2 seconds). take notice of the 3rd field timing taps on that page. it aggregates all taps for the given tapping session and averages them out. so if you tap 64 times, it will take the average of those 64 taps. i think this is how the tap tempo should work because it will give a more accurate result. this way gives you the choice to just tap 2 times, 3 times, 4 times, or as many times as you want and averages that out. it doesnt force you to tap a given number of times.

Thaank you for this link. That seem to work very accurate. Just like the hardware beatcouter I had in the 90s. the more you tap the closer you get to the tempo.
I tried many software beatcounter but most of them were very inaccurate.

Not to impose, but you should try this.

I just take an older drum track, which I know is not exotic, at least 4 bars with some slight feel-in here and there to hear where I am, and sequence sample along with it, than lookin for tempo, trim it good, fine tune until it fits and that's it.

I know that the beat detection in the sample edit window is not accurate as it could be. for me it seems more accurate the longer the sample. If it is same tempo throughout. If it is a drum loop from a real live player it wont be exact anyways as mentiond above. So I find BPM by playing it ina sequence of same length loop the sequence with sample in one shot mode and adjust BPM of sequence till it fits.
OK now to tap tempo.
I have dj'ed for years and some times i mix in mpc with a cd through my mixer and beat match with tap tempo and the rest by ear. It is quite accurate for me in this respect. i mean i mash up my mpc with other tracks for ages and it is in time
