hey sooty - this is similar to what i was trying to desribe a few posts up. - you can do it this way all ready to a certain extent:

1.create and save a pgm with generic sample names e.g. sample1, sample2 etc
2.clear memory or delete the samples from memory and reset the sample naming to "samplex"
3.load just the pgm ( in GPE missing samples should be visible e.g. "?sample1")
4. using the input thru screen use record button to capture samples
5. the samples are now automatically assigned to the pads according to the pad layout and the naming increments

the current limitations are : the default buffer, no quick way to reset the naming, using in-thru samples the main out and the sequencer stops when you hit stop.

the default buffer is a problem if you want to capture accurate one shots. I was doing it by hitting record at exactly the same time as doing a beatbox sound with my mouth. I experimented with Qlink to sample start to counteract the buffer, which was better but still not ideal.

For "quick and dirty" though this method my work for you.

I always like that skip back sampling feature on the fantom.

Its awesome to jam out and capture stuff. I agree with sooty. I think it would be cool if there was some kind of sample to pad as he described, in combination with this.

How long is skip back sampling on the fantom? and if i recall, dont you have to "engage" it first?

I think it would be nice to be able to do this without having to be in record mode - engaging it by shift + record (in any mode or atleast main screen) AND work on both external ins and internal main outs.

Skip back sampling on the Fantom is almost always automatically engaged. Just about the only time its not available is when your editing a sample. You set the length of time it samples in seconds. I keep mine around 15 seconds, but I believe it goes as far as 45 seconds or so. I'm almost sure it can't be set to a minute or longer. I seriously doubt that JJ could implement something like that, as it seems like it would require an entirely seperate sampling engine. I doubt it would be that difficult to implement in the sampling page though.

yo mikolo, thanks for the heads up on this. some very clever thinking there!

i'll give this a try later but yeah - if JJ could implement this in a more direct/easier way in the RECORD screen that would be ideal.

Some modern digital TV equipment includes 'timeshift' functionality, which does exactly as described. If you hear a good sample while watching TV, you just grab the remote and can rewind a few minutes and grab it with the MPC, then go forwards to watching live tv again. Nice feature if you got it :)
