You already got it, use your imagination.

mm what if we ask nicely to have the option to change the metronome sound, it can be hidden deep in the menu or something to give preference to better features but i would really like if we could change the sound somehow, but yes bug fixes and all the rest come first , even though i think this could be easy for him to implement

One strange effect 3.0 has had on me is that it is making me think with a different state of mind when coming up with sequences/songs. Direct recording is the biggest reason for this change. I used to think in terms of phrases, slices, loops, resampling, beat matching and midi control when I approached the mpc.

Now that 3.0 is around I am approaching things a bit differently. Same as before, I usually start by cutting up a drum part or other section from a record or so and making a few drum/sample kits, then laying down two or three different sequences that work going back and forth. But now instead of only being able to go after a catchy chopped sample, or midi controlled synth to make the next part, I can grab an instrument or mic and freestyle over the parts. Being able to do this has opened a whole new world for me on the mpc.

Say you have three sequences with drums, maybe a keyboard loop or whatever. Then you can grab say a bass guitar and start going. Extend your phrases by using the copy bars function in the seq edit menu and make a long bassline or so. Do whatever you like. Then maybe you have a couple ideas for vocals, use copy sequence as necessarry and record different vocal ideas on tr61-64 on the different sequences. Add whatever you like in these sequences to tracks 61-64 and things start sounding more and more like a song. Then maybe go back and edit the drums so they match the phrase a little more using fills, cymbals, kit changes, etc.

If you fill up the direct record tracks, just blank out the TR field, assign the take to a program and pad, go to another regular empty track (1-63), then in step edit place an event that starts this phrase at 1.00.000. Now you can add filters, lfo, etc to this like any other track. You can also loop this track at any point you like by adding another event at whatever time you want to loop at.

Anyway, the Direct Record bugs are not all out yet and you have to trim a little bit off the front of each sample, but it's so easy with the new trim screen that it's not a creativity killer or anything. The other features like grid edit, new trim/chop, load/save, etc.. make using this box easier and faster.

In summary I think the mpc now lets you work how you want, rather than how it wants. With that said, how has 3.0 changed the way you guys work?

All i can say is WORKFLOW!!

No switchin back and forth between USB...i love the new chop screen, cuts choppin time in half. I like the grid edit due to the fact that i can see my hits plotted, and being able to move events around. Using the pad as ap tempo is hella reliable, works better than the actual button.

You were right bigman...OS3 has changed the way i work on the MP for the better...

co-sign everything.

added to that MODE + 11 makes programming so much better and quicker, being able to select a whole load of stuff and edit parameters, this opens up new possibilities.

That is dope.

the grid edit is a happy medium, it means i can now play my stuff in then go and tidy it up much quicker than step editt. also being able to copy and change settings too with the window button in grid is heavy. SO quick.

the environment is so much more streamlined now.

if only we could shuffle notes around by increments in Grid!!
can you do this on the 2500?

I'm blown away by all this to be honest.

The workflow is definitely much better. Creativity comes alot easier with all the added features.

i think the bit rate is down to the converters, but i may be wrong. it would be cool to have though. extra effects? hmm nah, just better ones please. :D

You can always downsample/reduce bit rate regardless of the converters. From what I remember there is a grunge effect that basically does this. I doubt he could rewrite the sampling engine itself to support different rates as well as the file structure for saving/loading. Applying an effect to achieve the same sound is probably a lot easier.

sure that's true, but not the same thing as true 12bit. 12 doesn't go into 16 and leave an integer, therefore it won't be accurate, it'll merely be an effect which gets close to the sound.

The bit grunger sounds more like an overdrive or a distortion. Akai even describes it as such in the manual, though the name for the effect is rather deceiveing. That's Wakai for ya.

This os is the shit, my mpc is doing shit I didn't ever think it would do. When this os is done, he is going to have a loyal customer over here period....

check yer math::

12 bit is 2 to the power of 12,,,
16 bit is 2 to the power of 16,,,

seems like 12bit would indeed go into 16bit evenly.
(ie if full range = full range then any 12 bit value will have exact correspondance with one of the 16 bit possibilities)
it seems clear if you think of each bit as splitting the range in 2, which is essentially what is does.

however a 12bit d/a convertor will have a different analog anti-aliasing circuit which is probably part of the magic.

I'm using the OS 3.0 beta version, liking the extra functionality, however I am experiencing problems saving and loading. This could be a legacy of the OS 2.1. Anyway, I wonder if anyone else has encountered errors such as "end of file" when trying to load an "ALL" file and if it does load I am finding a complete sequence missing in say a project of 10 sequences. Very strange was if I am loading just one seq. from an "ALL" file I get the load MPC2000XL file!!, thus getting wrong file message. A bit concerned what the effect of writing and erasing the updated beta's is having on my previously saved projects. Using a 2G compact flash card for saving and loading, all my data for a single project is saved in a specific folder.

Over and out

Yo man, ishhh happened to me too man... I think its after you try renaming the file after the folder has been created. Also, it could be (if your workin on a mac) a premature ejectuation....hahah, i pulled out early on my buddies mac, and all my sequences were fuked...

Only tried to re-name an ALL file not the actual folder, that seemed to really upset this little beast. This is perhaps the worst thing you can do, like I found entire folders had been deleted, and card full, system errors!!. I wonder if I should re-format the CF card with the most recent beta version? ERr using a PC cobber!
