JJ OS2 1.19 I'm having a serious Note Repeat issue!!!!

For the first time, I now finally have a chance to try out the new JJ OS2. I went through it and I really like all of the new features it offers. I've been considering spending the $49 to get the full access.

Unlike many of you here, I like to play my MPC 1000 through my MIDI keyboard instead of on the pads. I map my drumkits on a keyboard in a way that would make them easier to play. Coming from a JJ OS1 4.78 background, I use the note repeat feature a lot (great for those 808 drums!!!!). What I do is activate the Note Repeat by holding Shift + Tap Tempo and trigger the pad drum samples from my MIDI keyboard. In JJ OS1 4.78 and below, Note Repeat will respond to MIDI notes transmitted from a MIDI keyboard. However, after just recently upgrading to OS2 1.19, I'm unable to do this. As a matter or fact, once note repeat is activate by Tap Tempo + Shift, the MIDI keyboard stops triggering the MPC's drum samples altogether and I won't be able to trigger any drum samples through the MIDI keyboard until the note repeat function is deactivated. Yet, if I hit a pad, a drum sound will trigger with the note repeat effect. In other words, Note Repeat only works when I hit the pads in JJ OS2 1.19!!!!!!!!

This has been quite bothersome to me as I rely on my MIDI keyboard for triggering sound and I love the note repeat effect I get when play drum samples through the keyboard in the older JJ OS. Is this a feature that was removed recently? Or is this a bug that need to be fixed? Looked through the JJ OS2 manual to see if there's a hidden screen with settings that would allow me to change the behavior of the note repeat function, but I found nothing unfortunately. I'm I doing something wrong? I really would like for this to be fixed!!!!!!!!

If this is infact a bug, I would definitely like for this to be resolved in the next release. The ASDR envelope generators, sampler engine, and non-destructive chopping are all sweet features but I would feel much more comfortable and willing to buy this new JJ OS2 if the note repeat feature would function just like in the previous JJ OSs. I don't know about you all but I'm not to keen on taking away old features that are good or essential while in the process of adding new ones. The traditional operation of the "Note Repeat" feature is part of what makes an MPC an MPC.

Man this OS2 is "off da chain"!!!!! If JJ gets the note repeat thing together, I'd buy this OS in a heart beat. With the exception of the little note repeat issue I'm having and the lack of realtime time-stretch (I wonder if that's even possible), this OS does pretty much everything I could ever want in an MPC.

There's no guarantee on the realtime time-stretch but if they can pull it off that would be sweet. Other than that, fixing this note-repeat issue would make this OS absolutely perfect!!!!

Way to go on the non-destructive chopping!!!!!!!

Anyway, about the note repeat problem I've described above, could someone else please try this out with a MIDI keyboard or MIDI controller and confirm whether or not this is a bug. If so, I'll try to report this to JJ. That way, maybe they start working on a fix.

It's a bug. There's also issues with assigning a footswitch to note repeat -- the switch seems to work in reverse or is just plain weird. I can get external midi notes past the thru but engaging repeat has no effect. It gets pretty bad -- at one point between switching the functions in and out and sending notes I actually had the whole sequence revert to default, save the program on the active track -- all the other settings just went away.

realtime time-stretch is somethin I been waitin to see on the JJ for some time now.

I hope he does it.

I haven't tried out the foot switch issue yet on the NOTE REPEAT yet. I gotta try that out too. However, I did submit the following report and bug reproduction procedure to JJ:

A MIDI keyboard or other external MIDI device does not trigger MPC program samples when NOTE REPEAT is activated. To reproduce this bug, apply the following procedure:

1. Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI-OUT of a MIDI keyboard to the MIDI-IN of the MPC.
2. Power on the MIDI keyboard and MPC.
3. Create a program with drum samples and assign each drum sample to an MPC pad and a corresponding MIDI note on the keyboard.
4. Load the program you've created containing drum samples that are assigned to pads and mapped to MIDI notes on the keyboard.
5. In the Main Screen, select the loaded program.
6. Hit a few pads on the MPC to trigger drum samples.
7. Hit the keys on the MIDI keyboard that are setup to correspond to the pads to trigger the drum samples from the keyboard.
8. Hold "Tap Tempo" + "Shift" then release to active NOTE REPEAT.
9. Select a TC quantization of your choice (F1-F5) for NOTE REPEAT.
10. Trigger and hold a drum pad or two that have drum samples assigned to them.
11. Press and hold a key on the MIDI keyboard that is mapped to a drum samples in the loaded program.
12. Deactivate NOTE REPEAT.
13. Hit an MPC pad assigned to a sample to trigger the sample.
14. Press a key on the MIDI keyboard that is mapped to a pad sample in the MPC program.

Test Results: Prior to activation of NOTE REPEAT, a drum sample is triggered and heard when pressing a pad on the MPC and pressing a pad mapped key on the MIDI keyboard. After activation of NOTE REPAT, a drum sample is triggered and heard only when pressing a sample assigned MPC pad. No sound is heard when attempting to trigger a sample from the MIDI keyboard. After deactivation of NOTE REPEAT, a drum sample is heard when triggering from both, the MPC and the MIDI keyboard.


The NOTE REPEAT function does not repeat notes triggered from a MIDI keyboard or other external MIDI device. To reproduce this bug, apply the following procedure:

1. Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI-OUT of a MIDI keyboard containing an internal sound generator to the MIDI-IN A of the MPC.
2. Connect a second MIDI cable from the MIDI-IN of the MIDI keyboard to the MIDI OUT A of the MPC.
3. Connect both the MPC and MIDI Keyboard to a mixer using audio cables and power on all units.
4. In the Main Screen, select the proper MIDI channel and program change parameters to play a preset from the MIDI keyboard's internal sound generator.
5. Hit a few pads on the MPC to trigger the keyboard sounds.
6. Hit a few keys on the MIDI keyboard to trigger the sounds from the keyboard.
7. Hold "Tap Tempo" + "Shift" then release to active NOTE REPEAT.
8. Select a TC quantization of your choice (F1-F5) for NOTE REPEAT.
9. Trigger and hold a drum pad or two on the MPC to trigger the keyboard sounds.
10. Press and hold a key on the MIDI keyboard to trigger a MIDI note throught the keyboard.

Test Results: When a note is triggered from an MPC pad held down with NOTE REPEAT activated, the notes will repeat at the proper time correction as it is suppose to. However, when a note is triggered from a MIDI keyboard key held down with NOTE REPEAT activated, the note will only sound once and not repeat.

on 1.19 the note number doesnt show up on the screen when triggered from an external keyboard (like it does on OS1 and previous). I belive its a bug and may be related to the note repeat issue.

I just received the following email message from JJ concerning this bug that I reported:

Although correction of this bug was tried, since a more serious bug will occur if it corrects, correction of this bug takes much time.Therefore, it is not corrected in the following version. (Ver1.20)

Apparently, they must be having difficulty working out this bug without creating others. I think they'll eventually get it corrected after a while. I'm going to just hold off on OS2 for now until they've had time to work out all of the kinks. Those full stage ASDRs seem mighty tempting though. Once they get this bug corrected as well as bugs that other users reported, I'll definitely grab OS2!!!!!!! However, the good news is they know about it and they're looking into it. That's wonderful!!!!

Really? I'm going to turn my MPC on and test that out tonight. I'll report this one as well depending on the results I get. Better yet, I'm going to try the newly released ver1.20 and see if it's still there or wether it has been fixed.

I just submitted the same bug report to JJ again but this time for OS2XL along with the question of whether it would be possible to correct (specifically for OS2XL) without creating a more serious bug.

I hope to get a response from them eventually.

As you can see, sadly there probably won't be a fix for NOTE REPEAT in MIDI keyboard for OS2 or OS2XL. I guess I'll just have to get used to using the pads for all my NOTE REPEAT operations. I suppose it won't be that difficult of an adjustment. I'll just have to get used to doing things a little differently. At least we still have NOTE REPEAT and didn't lose it altogether.

Although a fix isn't possible, I would still like to thank and compliment JJ for their quick response and their efforts to address the problem. At least they looked at the issue and TRIED to fix it. Not very many software developers give customer support that good these days.
