(Weird Ramblings about JJ OS)

I paid for JJ OS 4.99 to get a couple specific features, which I completely love!

But that said, is anyone else in love with the story behind JJ OS? I'm thinking forward 10 years or so, when I may still be using an MPC1000/2500 in all honesty. I doubt Akai will discontinue the 1000/2500 anytime soon, with all the continued interest (in part thanks to JJ!).

I'm also making a prediction here-- JJ will go on to release an OS version 3, and more seperate versions as well. The cost of the newest version available will soon be over $200 USD.

I guess it's a choice between the belief that MPC users will pay an exhorbitant amount of money for new software, and demand for upgrades. But yeah, I agree with you - JJ (I sincerely hope) will be around for years to come, and will continue to release quality software upgrades which keep the demand and interest in a product which isn't actually theirs.

You've got to admire their dedication. Sure, they're making money, but they deserve to get paid after putting in what must be hundreds of hours of programming time.

I wonder if the average user thinks that JJ is an extortionist or not. Personally I see this work as 100% value add and if JJ can continue to make the MPC 1k and MPC 2500 functionally close to the MPC 5000 I'm okay with shelling out a few more dollars as opposed to a few grand. The only software features we probably won't see is a soft synth and a larger fx bus.

I would love to see support for larger than 120gb drives, but I know I'm in the minority for this one.

It's kind of funny to see just how many features continue to be added to what would otherwise be a stagnant product line at this point. If we were looking at the MPC 1k with the Akai OS, an upgrade to the 5k would be a lot more compelling than it otherwise is now.

Don't see this. There is really limited code space to add features without subtracting them. Possibly an integrated multiple OS system, where you boot into JJ x y or z to perform specific killer tasks would be possible, but to keep piling on features you're gonna have to see a complete os rewrite, and our mpcs will have all burst into flames by the time thats done.

it's not just limited codespace, it's limited cpu.

JJ is busting his ass and squeezing every last drop of performance out of the mpc 1000 but ultimately it's still old hardware & a ridiculously underpowered cpu that is going to limit it in the end. for example, there are a lot of cpu limits in the 1000 on the number of simultaneous actions that can be performed. that is why you have to stop the sequencer to perform some actions, why the q-links can only affect 1 track at a time, why you can't have 2 NOTE-ON q-links active simultaneously, etc... there's nothing JJ can do about that.

ultimately, akai will have to step up and come out with a new 1000 that brings the machine into 2008. given their history i have NO confidence in them being able to do that, even tho it would be an HUGE money maker for them.

...and i'm not going to touch any new akai hardware until JJ is doing the OS for it. i want someone who is going to know what they're doing, update & maintain the code, listen to user requests, and keep the thing going and alive for years to come. akai just wants to release something and then neglect it so you are forced to shell out money for their new hardware when it comes out to solve all the problems you are having with the old hardware you already bought. fukc that.

yeah we got a kind of magic here, no small thanks to such an awesome user base
makes you wonder what AKAI could have been if they took advantage of the resources of their end-users

the only thing that AKAI could do in my opinion that would completely redeem them would be to open source their OS's, create their own forum, and allow developers to have at it.

if i were to create a sampler, i'd call it the Sorcebox.

I don't think this is extortion. It would only be that if akai were behind the whole jjos. And using a farse as a cover to get more money from the users of a product they made. And seeing how they just came out and charged for a fix to a major design flaw. I doubt that.

the new linndrum will probably take the crown for a while. a modern machine that takes us back to the roots of 12bit sampling and analogue drum machines.

^^^ Weird how that showed up as "NYM WROTE" . Multiple additional OS's would probably not be good, cuz that would take away from the programming for the main OS. The demand for specific features added or deleted for the sake of a custom OS would not be good.
