MPC 1k as MIDI controller to trigger vsts

I just want to use my mpc 1k to play/record midi with my vsts in Logic 5.5. Is this possible without a keyboard?
I just want the pads to trigger midi performance in vst.

You would have to have an interface with MIDI out and MIDI in, and I suppose you have to set up the right notes on your pads. I am not as versed in MIDI with the MPC as many of the people on here, but that is a start. LOL.

I already have the MPC 1k running into my ezbus interface. In/OUT all proper.

Do you have it established as a controller in Logic? I don't Logic well or I would type the steps out.....
Are you just trying to control notes like a MIDI keyboard or are you trying to trigger events?

ok,

if you want to just play notes by hitting pads on your mpc, and have the notes trigger the soft synths on tracks in logic,

set up the mpc to transmit midi from a track, so that the tracks are sending midi notes via the pads, (eg OS2, in the bottom right corner of the main screen), set the "MIDI:OFF" to say "MIDI:1A" where 1 is the MIDI channel, and A is the mpc port A MIDI out.

have the logic track ready to receive midi by switching on the "rec" button or arming the track for midi input, logic's midi thru should then have any incoming midi "Thru" via the track thats armed straight to the track's instruments.

check as you hit the pads that logic's receiving the notes, in the transport bar, you should see any activity in the midi monitor.

you might want to make a program in the MPC on the track to have notes spread out in true chromatic note order, by default AKAI had the pads to notes in programs laid out in General Midi standard, that has the notes mixed up, compared to a chromatic keyboard like way.

What should I set my MID/SYNC to?

you need not set any sync stuff up if youre really trying to play the pads, to make notes occur in the vst synth.


but if you want a recorded sequence of notes in the mpc tracks to play the vst's in sync with logic's tempo, u need to set logic to transmit midi clock, to the midi port that the mpc's attached to, and then set the mpc to receive the midi clock in the correct midi in, as slave mode, dont set its out to be master as you'll get a midi feedback loop back to logic, and a midi lock up/crash situation.

or have the mpc to be the master and send midi clock out from its out ports, and have logic be the slave and receive the clock.

i'd set it up in the enviroment page then save it as a template. this way you can route each of the incoming channels to software channels and apply midi effects on the inputs. you will be able to use logics arp and chord modes via this method.

these are for logic 8 but the same princeipals should apply, as the enviro hasnt changed drasticly.

nice one nano. i use logic 8 pretty much all the time now, only using mpc when not facing the computer world, but mbe i see some reconcilliation on the road ahead.
