thought i'd flag this up as i've not seen it mentioned anywhere..

i was fiddling around with the filters using 0s2xl - but it should work with any OS -

load up any sample - set filter to high pass - set value low (between 7-12) so that it cuts off the lowest frequencies - put RES to between 97 and 100

= silly bass

if theres a bit too much bass - but you have the right tone - you can use ther second filter (os dependant) to cut off the lower frequencies and it keeps the tone

it worked nice with drums and samples.

maybe everyonme knows about this and im just stupid - if thats the case - please explain to me how cutting off the low frequencies boosts them (i can only assume that im max resonating the bottom frequency)

high pass is nice for scooping upg that punch in the low-mid section of the kick, leaving room to layer some fat sub action under neat each..

You are cutting the inaudible freqs that eat up headroom, which basically will reduce the bass impact.
When you clean them up by filtering those low lows it allows the bass region to function more efficiently.
It like the old amps and receivers that had a rumble filter on them to allow you to clean up the low end to prevent the excessive movement of the woofer so the bass would sound tighter.

It´s really simple, and though Sovereign is right in that cutting excess lo freq will actually improve bass reproduction in many cases the above case has very little to do with that.

When you apply resonance to your HPF you simply boost the area around the cutoff freq, that is basically what resonance is. Think of it as if you took a parametric eq with a narrow q-value, set it to work at say 120 Hz and then boost it +10 dB, it´s the same thing as a HPF cutting off at 120 Hz with a good amount of resonance only that your HPF leaves a steep slope below it´s active freq.

Just grab any parametric eq you have around, boost it to the max and sweep the freq parameter. It´s really similar to a classic LPF filter sweep only that the freq´s above the affected freq range stay untouched.

Googled and found a maybe enlightening illustration, it´s a LPF but the principle is the same:

I found out about this a few years ago in reason. You can most definitely get your shit to boooooooom... it's handy having that second filter in OS1/OS2XL around to tweak it more, for sure.

nice, thanks for your informative reply - so the resonance creates a nipple on the cutoff point of the frequency - is nuts that it produces more low frequencies than os2xl's bass boost!

yeah its a bit old information, but these things should be repeated each forum generation occurs, so all good really.

i use this method to create sub bass tones akin to overloaded sinewaves. in an os that has 2 filters the 2nd filter is indispensible in order to control the madness.

OS2 = very useful with velocity>depth for the scales, ADSR can give pitch movement ofer time....(but lacks 2nd 'sub-safety' filter!)

but OS1 = perfect : 2 filters, and also the velocity>filter amount can cause the tones to be played across a scale of tones by setting appropriate velocity values.

it aint your standard 12 note scale, but it works for setting out a few bass tones.

QFT. Even if you're just using the EQHI/LOW settings in OS2XL, they can be invaluable in providing a desired element of control over the wild bass frequencies that can occur with this, especially when using this li'l trick on kick drums. Now, let's get thos tres puntos bishes!

thats why if you turn up the resonance on a real analog filter (most of them anyway) it will self oscillate.. that peak around the cutoff point gets sharper and larger

also you can do the opposite and use a LPF with cutoff around 80-90 and resonance up around 90-100. Gives a high frequency boost.

I used to do this all the time with my EMAX.
