JJ has given us the aftertouch, but am i right in thinking its not real aftertouch?

but actually a mono function, ie: if u have an Inst Program, playing chords (more than one pad at any time, multiple pad pressures) then the aftertouch for each pad is not recognized, and only one pad lays down its aftertouch when recording pad hits...... probably the first pad pressed has priority.

it looks like its recorded as Channel Pressure, which isnt aftertouch is it? i was thinking that true aftertouch should be more like Poly Pressure no?

nym - your into this aftertouch bizniz, any light to shed here?

at one time, probably still, poly aftertouch is usable on DRUM pgms, but never inst pgms
i dunno, i never used it because editing it is a major irritation
i only ever record channel pressure so i can link it to ccs and then edit the curves afterwards with my infrared sensor.

but yeah i use the aftertouch capability heavily.

truth is though that true "poly pressure" is very rare in any musical instrument

ok cool, 'cos i was using an inst prog as a method of trying out bits of aftertouch, and thats probably how i got to thinking it wasnt right. ie: not poly.

but say my nord modular has the (not so) rare poly pressure,

ok tho' cos drum progs is where i'll be using it mostly anyhow.

yeah and im feeling the qlink slider edit work in grid edit,

i like this place to edit any qlink data, so another use in aftertouch is always welcome, its a shame its not more widespread as a source of modulation though, ie: loop position, or fx depth etc.

heya Nymoid,

is there a way to reduce overall data in the ch pressure grid edit? like the Qlink edit used to have a resolution setup when in "auto", i see theres stuff in auto here for ch pr, but wandering if theres anything else to limit the amount of ch pr. ticks i can set when in a manual slider sweep.....its killing my cpu!

Both channel and poly pressure is "real" aftertouch. To make a long story short, Ensoniq has the patent on a reasonably affordable way of producing polyphonic aftertouch (using hall effect sensors). They seem to be sitting on this patent and not using it themselves any more. It is frustrating, although a common story in corporate history.

Having poly pressure output over MIDI would make the new OSxl extremely attractive to me, but it seems that this is not possible.

If you're looking for cheap keyboards that put out poly pressure, look for old Ensoniq synths, like the ESQ and SD-1. A few others do as well, as a quick Google will reveal.

hehehe no biggie,

hey he's (nym) got a heavy arsenal of input devices i reckon. by the looks of some old youtube posts - they're all twisted & scuffed up out of recognition too ahahahah . (or "mwoooaaahahha")

and there's a lot of kit with motion to MIDI out there.
