What JJ OS you feelin and why?

most heads say the JJ OS 2 is the best one.

which JJ OS are you using and why? what are some stand out features?

was it easy to install?

if you install JJ OS, you can switch back and forth from it to the Akai OS?

couldn't work in anything other than os2xl despite its few rough areas (i can count the ones that impact me on one hand)

getting around the os is extremely quick

the drum grid edit is actually zoomable/usable

and the biggest reason, for chopped samples, os2xl has the strongest sequencer, largely owed to crossfade loop + quantize strength. in 2xl, you can chop samples and reprogram them in a way you could never do in any of the other os's without it sounding very very rough and clicky. this makes for the smoothest use of oneshots in either reprogramming or original creative use of sliced oneshots

if you aren't using a DAW and are big on drum layering/use of qlinks instead of ccs, you might have to consider os2 for old simult style. but it's a shame cuz you're missing out on a lot.

Still haven't played with cross fades yet... I should really get on that :/

crossfades are great for those of us splitting samples into single-note oneshots
they're also incredible for those of us who turn these single oneshots into sample-based tones tuned to the key of our song. this is great for electronic hip hop and sample mangled tonage, or just trying to get a usable sound out of an otherwise harder to use oneshot.

I finally downloaded all versions of JJ OS yesterday. I took a sick day, and spent basically ALL DAY sitting in front of my 2500, putting it through its rounds. It's a tossup between OS2 and XL for me.... XL has very cool new bells and whistles, but the core functionality of OS2 felt better to me.

I mean, this is just from one day of using them, so maybe further down the line, my opinion may change. Good thing I can switch back and forth

By the way, what's the safest way to switch? I tried rebooting while holding certain specific buttons and I get the infamous "wrong card" error. So, I have to resort to switching through Load Mode. Is this ok? It's kind of scary that it keeps erasing and rewriting the memory. I thought you could just do some sort of quick switching between OS's without having to essentially reinstall. Hopefully it won't crap out. Any word?

xl for me.............. like NYM said, despite a few lil thangs............ iam really liking the appregiator & the 2 sequence mixin
onda real, the os 2 is the stronger outta thee 2, but if they fix the XL, the os 2 will offically become the 2nd in command

i am using jj osxl cause of the 2ndfilter nd eq s what make the
sample sound a lot cleaarer n the mix,
grid is betterthan os2
workflow is super,
with jjos mpc rocks!

stronger is going to be subjective. for me, i need the most capable sequencer, and quantize strength/zoomable drum grid makes for the best allaround sequencing capability in os2xl

standalone, os2 is more powerful due to mix automation (soon to return to 2xl) and more importantly SIMULT
if both are paired with a daw, os2xl is more powerful because of improved grid, better workflow, and quantize strength since DAW/ccs make QLINK => filters irrelevant.

i've only used XL on my mpc2500, since i bought in december and "updated" to JJ now in february.
i like it and it's a huge difference to the mpc3000 that i've hade before :p
(however, i liked the text-based os on the mpc3000).

some bug's in the XL but nothing that's annoying me right now...

it was mentioned in a previous thread. JJ is going to add PAN & LEVEL to the qlinks.

BUT... this functionality is still going to be GIMPED in 2xl (like a lot of other stuff).


what i wrote regarding this previously:

it's nice he's adding it in, but it will still be crippled in 2xl because of the way JJ changed the q-links. in 2xl you can only have ONE type of q-link tweak active at a time, so if you use the q-link to tweak the level or the pan, it will wipe out any other tweaks you have previously made (filter, tune, sample start, etc...).

in os 2, you can have 2 types of q-link active simultaneously & recorded into the sequence. you can also assign the q-link to effect the entire track or just 1 pad. you can even go into GRID EDIT and edit your REALTIME qlink tweaks (copy, paste, delete, etc..). this capability was removed in 2xl and is one of the main reasons i stopped using the os.

the rest of the shit is useless to me. if i want all of that i just turn to the left and hit the power button on my 909. without any bugs. and all the features are included. but for the 1k its os1. rock solid

def os2 for know, arp and chord dont bother me cause i got a keyboard for that stuff. all i want as quantise strength in os2.
