Hi. Before I report this as a bug, I would like to ask all you OS2XL users to try this out:

1. Load a sample.
2. Create a new program (or load an existing program with samples).
3. Go into program edit and select a pad/sample and go to the pitch ASDR.
4. Make sure the base pitch (B. Pitch) is set to 44.1K.
5. Keep aftertouch (After) at zero.
6. Set the depth to a negative value, any negative value.
7. Set any of the envelope parameters (attack, decay, sustain or release) to a value other than zero.
8. Press the pad containing the sample and gradually adjust/increase the ASDR envelope values.

Results: The sample does not play back correctly when the pitch ASDR envelope parameters are greater than zero along with depth parameter set at negative values. Instead, the sample plays back at an incorrect pitch. The greater the ASDR parameters, the longer the sample plays back at incorrect pitch (when a long sample is used).

I really don't think this should be happening and perhaps I should report this to JJ but I'd like to get a second opinion on it beforehand. Any objections? Please feel free to test it out and see for yourselves and let me know what you think.

No replies? Ok.

I just re-tested this a few minutes ago with a different sample and I get the same effect. As far as I'm concerned, this is a bug. I think I'm going to go ahead and report this anyway because the sooner I report it, the quicker it will be investigated and possibly corrected. I'd like to see this fixed in either the next release or the one after.

i'm not sure if i completely understand you (what is the 'incorrect' pitch?) but it sounds like the correct functionality to me. when you increase the ADSR, the sample should take longer to reach whatever value you set for the depth. if you set a negative depth, the sample pitch should slowly decrease in value until it reaches the value you set.

You're right. The pitch should "gradually" change from the base pitch to the desired altered pitch based on the pitch depth and ASDR setting. That's the way it's really suppose to work. However, if you set the depth to a negative value and edit the ASDR settings, you don't get a gradual change from the base pitch to the desired altered pitch based on settings. Instead, it pitch of the sample plays at a drastically high pitch. For example:

If you take a long sample and go into the pitch env ASDR settings and change the depth to "-1" or negative anything (doesn't matter) and change the sustain to +1, the sample will play back at a very high pitch a long way from it's base pitch. If you keep the depth at a negative value and play with the ASDR parameters a little, the sample may start off at the high pitch then go immdiately to the base pitch or vice versa. There are no smooth gradual alterations in pitch and your desired altered pitch doesn't change based on the settings when the depth is set at a negative value. I think this behavior is incorrect. The pitch ASDR functions differently (correctly) when the depth is set to a positive value.

It's kind of difficult for me to explain this but that's best way I know how. I think the best way to really understand what I'm talking about is to actually try it and edit the parameters.

One side note: As a feature request, I think it would be nice if the ASDR parameters themselves had positive and negative ranges instead of just positive ranges. In other words, it would be nice if the ASDR values range fom -127 to +127 instead of from 0 to +127. I know this all probably sounds confusing but the pitch ASDR on the Roland JV/XV synth engine is implemented this way and it's the perfect example of how I would like the JJ OS ASDR to function. I used to have a Roland MC505 and the pitch ASDR functioned just like this. It had positive and negative values for all ASDR settings as well as depth and the envelope made gradual changes in relation to the base pitch and desired altered pitch based on the user settings whether they be positive or negative.
