There was a (kind of unknown) TRx0x-style programming option in OS2 called "6pad 1bar edit".
(here's a thread about an issue with this one: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=102589&start=0&hilit=6pad+1bar)

I kind of liked it although it was a bit experimental.

Is this functionality completely removed in OS2XL or is it there somewhere under a new name/button? I can't find it anyway.

No, that's not what I meant. TRX0X style programming is; one button = one 16th note.

In OS2 it was possible to use the pads A01-A16 to turn hits on/off at the corresponding 16th note.
Exactly like a X0X (minus the leds).

It was done like this:
1. Load a drum program and assign to en empty sequence.
2. Mode+Pad15
3. If in 16Pad mode: Shift + F2 to activate 6Pad mode.
4. Chose a sound with up/down arrow.
5. Start playback.
6. Be sure to "stand" in the grid, use right arrow to get there.
7. Hit Numeric button.

It will now loop the current bar and using the pads will switch corresponding 16th on/off (full velocity).

Although the sound selection was kind of strange (same sound duplicated and other strange things, and numerous crashes) and although only full velocity could be entered. It was a good attempt to introduce real TRX0X-style programming.

But the "view" mode in Drum Grid only lacks one thing to achieve almost the same functionality. What's needed is an equivalent to the Numeric key in the example above - to switch input mode to Pad=16th note. That would work like:
a) Chose mode; hit pad to chose sound.
b) Enter mode; hit pad to turn 16th on/off.

yeah, i know what you're talking about. this was indeed removed from os 2xl.

i was just messing with it this morning after reading your post. interesting & fun way to get a beat programmed. very quick, too. like a lot of 'alternate' programming methods you end up making different sounding beats than you normally would. this and 'LOOP EDIT MODE' are two things that i thought were headed for improvement & expansion in os 2, but instead got abandoned when os 2xl came along. :(

i gave up on 2xl a while ago. i'm concentrating 100% on getting fixes & improvements made to os 2.

but if you want to work in 2xl, it might be worth it for you to make a request.
maybe JJ will put it back in if it doesn't 'cause a bug with other functions'.

Sooty you're getting me depressed about all this again... JJ is turning the power users into whiny brats!

But honestly they got me hooked on his OS, and now we need them to follow through for us. I'm considering getting someone to help me translate for better communication.

facts are facts. from my perspective (and a lot of other people as well) JJ had something powerful & fully functional that had a lot of room for growth & he abandoned it for something with some bells and whistles but core features gimped or buggy in order to get the cash flowing in again. this is different then when os 1 was abandoned for os 2. os 1 had no more codespace left and thus no more room for growth. 2 still had (has) a lot of space available to it.

what i'd like to see is for JJ to maintain 2 os's simultaneously (2 & 2xl) and get paid for both of them.

2xl will get the bulk of his time & the bigger new features, and will be available for those who like to work that way.
2 will get some smaller feature improvements & upgrades for a fee, and will be available for those who prefer it over 2xl.

don't see what's whiny about that. sounds like that's a win for everybody.

but it seems like almost everyday now there is a new thread with somebody asking about a feature and the answer is that it's either been removed or crippled in 2xl, yet it works fine in 2. i'm just trying to point out that there is a third option: you don't HAVE to use 2xl. we can get some improvements to 2 and JJ can get more money. the more people he hears from regarding this the more likely he is to do it.

i just sent JJ an email reminding him about this request last weekend along with a couple small requests for os 2. i haven't heard back yet but the fact that i didn't get an immediate NO means there's room for some optimism. who knows, maybe he's already working on it?

i've always wanted to do this as well. i'm surprised we don't have a japanese speaker on the forum.

i did ages ago - contacted JJ and said this was missing from XL. got no reply.

and 1.13 must be a big release, cause it seems that the stock reply to reporting any bugs lately seems to be "it will be in 1.13"

One thing I never understood was the sound selection in the "Numeric" mode. Maybe you can explain how it works?

Example:
When I tried it yesterday on a drum program with about 20 samples assigned to pads.
1. I got Line 1-4 showing the same pad, changing one of them changes the other lines.
2. Hitting a pad changes the assignment of the last line (line 6) - not the chosen line.
I never understood this functionality.

It's probably a bug, happened to me few days ago, at first I thought the cursor was on the 1-6 column, because you can set there which pads you want to see, but if it happens on the grid, it's a bug.
+I don't like the 4x4 input's gone from xl..
