MIDI recording problem in OS1

sup ya'll,

so I set up Reason (3.0) as a sound module to use w/ my MPC. I got it going, found a nice bass sound in Subtractor and then recorded it to a new MIDI Track (5) in my sequence.

The problem is - it won't play! There is no sound - the MIDI information is there when I open up GRID EDIT, so what am I doing wrong here?

It was playing fine when I recorded, but today, I opened up the project and there is just no sound coming from it.

I hope i'm explaining myself correctly.

Should I assume that you know so much about MIDI that you´ve also booted up Reason, checked your output on the MPC and configured Reason to receive according to that? And that you have a correct setup to a mixer or input thru on your MPC so you could monitor Reasons audio output?

Is this the first time your otherwise smooth MIDI rig fails you or is it your first try at MIDI:ing external sources?

so yeah, this is my first time at MIDI'ing Reason sounds. I thought that when I initially recorded the sequence on the MPC, that it would RECORDED, aka, I didn't need to load up Reason again to hear what I played.

So, you're saying that I have to open up Reason to hear what I played? So how am I going to use the sound if I have to have Reason open to hear it?

Yes, either Reason or any other sound generator with a MIDI input, but if you´d like that exact patch you´ll have to fire up Reason.
MIDI info only contains a varying amount of control info that lets different units communicate, it does not carry any audio or specific "sound", in this case you´ve probably only recorded some note values and note on/off´s. That info needs to be sent to and interpreted by a synth, plug in, sampler or other sound generating device in order to be heard.

okay, so how does one record MIDI then? How do you make tracks with MIDI if you can't hear what you've recorded? You have to convert it all to audio? Now I'm more confused then ever.

you've already recorded MIDI. you recorded it into the MPC.
MIDI is just information: note on, note off, how hard you hit the keys... etc.

what you are talking about is the SOUND from the instrument that is receiving the MIDI.
that's audio. audio is seperate from MIDI.


you have a simple setup: Reason connected to the MPC via MIDI.

you record some MIDI notes while Reason is connected so you hear the Reason synth playing.
now the MIDI is recorded into the MPC, but the audio hasn't been recorded at all.

in the future, if you want to hear the synth sound when you hit PLAY on the MPC, you need to have Reason hooked up exactly like it was when you first recorded it.

so if you want to go do a live gig or go jam at a friends place, you need to bring your computer with you that has Reason on it and have it hooked up to the MPC via a MIDI cable. the MPC triggers the external gear via MIDI.

if you just want to make tracks at home, then you just record the audio into your DAW.


google 'intro to midi' or something & read up. this is VERY basic stuff that you need to understand before you go much further with the MPC.

trust me, i've read Tweakheadz pages about MIDI. It's a good overview, but doesn't help much for getting into these kinds of situations.

So how can I record the audio from Reason into my MPC?

Okay, I guess I have some more reading to do...

create a patched phrase or inst pgm with the reason sound file. but if your this new to midi your probably going to have to read up on that too.
