I currently have the 5.54 JJ OS on my MPC 2500.. I have not paid for any of the versions. I want the best OS available how should i go about updating? I've read numerous posts and still can't decipher the correct process to update to the best OS or latest OS available.. Thanks

on your 2500 you have to upgrade all the way to xl. then you can downgrade to any of the other 2 versions. but you have to purchase the full xl version and it will activate the lower versions too.

daaaaamn......i never knew that.

i know JJ gotta make his money but damn, if you're someone that just prefers OS1 (like me) you're kinda forced to pay for a higher version of the OS you're not gonna use.

most people love the higher versions so i guess this probably isn't a huge issue for most, but if you know you just want to use OS1 thats brutal.

...on the flipside though 2500 users get all 3 os's for $113 where 1000 users would actually have to pay $162, so if you wanted to get all the OS's the 2500 users definitely get the better value.

definitely true, so it wouldn't be such a huge thing to jump straight into XL.

its hard for me to look at it that way cause as the JJOS' were originally released it was a bit of a nice situation moving from OS' chronologically to see how things progressed, compare features, see what worked best, etc...

but i guess new users jumping in might as well go straight to XL if they can. and in that scenario 2500 users definitely get the better value price wise (forgot to mention that in my original message...just edited it now).

actually the feature list is readily availible. so its easy to do a comparison of the 3 and decide from the start which one better suites your needs. making it a rip off if you only want os1. but then again you gotta remember that your dealing with somebody that stole source code in the first place. not a very ethical business man to start with. so bottom line is if you want os1 you need to pay for xl.

I.ve looked at the comparison chart but don't see a 5.54. I guess that is my confusion what is os1 5.54? I can't find any info on it. Thanks for all your input..

and once again, lunatic, saying that "he stole the code" is incorrect
i feel like you post that once a month and never educate yourself on the actual history
hard to make a comment about another man's ethics when you're actively spreading what can be considered at best an incomplete story

edit, and for the record i will not be discussion/rehashing it here, any interested party can search

mpc 2500 JJos1 is actually up to version 5.56

i'm guessing you bought your machine used, so luckily someone installed os1 on your machine for you back when each os version was sold seperately....

theres no need to rehash anything. but who owns the source code? not the infamous "jj" this has nothing to do with education. the os could not be dev'd without the source code. and he doesnt own it. people who are legitimately selling something dont have a shady payment system. if the code isnt stolen. then post his name. but you wont do that right. you have a letter of recomendation from him. so i know you know his name. so post it if he didnt steal the code. but you wont do that right?

Um, yes it could. Especially by somebody who worked on it or similar in the first place. Although with the right equipment I would imagine it could be read from the internal memory so there would be no reason to steal it before he left.

The SH7727 CPU is well documented. If he had to rely on stealing the source to get where he has how do you think he would of expanded on the functionality in the way he has? Obviously he is a talented programmer who knows how to code for the SH7727, has good knowledge of Xilinx FGPAs and knows how the one in the new MPCs works alongside the main CPU. Sure he has used information he was privy to in his employment at Akai, which I believe is illegal in itself, but that doesn't necessarily mean he stole the actual source code.

Of course I don't know what actually did or didn't happen, just pointing out that stealing the original source code is not the only way JJ could of got an OS for the MPC to the state it is.

Everyone knows JJ's identity it's no secret.
It's been talked about by Akai reps as well as his former boss (lead programmer).
What's really funny about your misunderstanding is that JJ has has more leverage in taking legal actions against Akai Pro than Akai Pro has against him.
If the original team was still together we probably would have seen some action against Akai.
The source code you like to refer to never fully belonged to Akai Japan they had not paid the programmers for the work. When they went bankrupt and were sold Akai Pro was formed and they simple assummed that Akai Japan owned the code thus giving them ownership as the new structure.
Unfortunately you can't pass ownership on something you don't own.
They first wanted the team to continue to develope the code but then decided it was too expensive and things broke down.
Remember Akai tried to say that the original problems in the OS was from intentinal bad programming on but it was more because the code they had was a basic beta OS.
Since Akai would have to pay for the additional work Akai ended up having to hack around to complete the OS themselves, which created the original ugly MPC1000 OS.
The original free JJ OS was just a basic stage one completion of the code Akai had acquired in the buy out and had tried to complete themselves.

In order for the code JJ had to be considered stolen Akai Japan would have to first settle up with the original programming team who did the 4k and 1k so they could take actual possesion of the code.
After that the code could actually be considered the property of Akai Pro.
Since Akai Japan is no more and would gain nothing from this it won't happen.

Not stolen from Akai but Stolen by Akai.

This is not the case.
