I have JJOS version 3.99 and Im trying to use the 16 level function...it works great for velocity, decay etc.....but im trying to use the tuning function and it does not work...it will detune whatever the piece of audio is but it does not keep all the new samples in real time, they all become dramatically slower and lower in tone or fast and high pitched....in all the videos I watch whoever is demonstrating 16 level does not have to manipulate time stretch, it just automatically does it for you...........whats up??

in the video your talking about he is not time stretching in the literal sense, he's using the patchphrase feature which is actually much more like a reason rex file than a "time stretch"- it plays back sample slices, but unfortuantely once the slices points are set you cant change them.

you have to create the patchphrase first too, theres nothing automatic about what he's demonstrating, other than the 16 levels button spreading out the sample.

thats the video i saw, i hope its the one that you guys are talking about....he just takes a simple synth sound and is able to create his own musical phrase with it...no time strecth, no patch phrase nothing....if he is patch phrasing or time stretching, he does not show it inthe video....someone help me do what this guy does please

just frigging hit that button '16 levels' set it to the pad u want to do it to , select 'tune', it will give u 16 levels of semitones across the pads.

ah ok, ive seen the video now - it wasnt the one that nym was dreading after all - so sorry for any distress caused!

theres a few possible reasons why pitching up in this situation doesnt sound as noticeable.
1.he only pitches up the sample 4 semitones
2.theres a delay effect added to the sound

its also possible that the sound is actually quite long, but by altering the ADSR and/or setting the playback to note on, the length of the sound is controlled by the envelope.. only if he triggered the entie sample would you hear the sample getting shorter when speeded up.

Also 16 levels tune always plays back samples faster and slower to change the pitch.

mikolo...thanks for staying patient, its a virtue

im glad to hear that its just not as simple as hitting 16 levels, because I was getting very frustrated when hearing my sample slown down and sped up....unfortunately I am not that knowledgeable yet with this mpc....I have been a drummer for 20 years and am just starting to play with this 1000 so I dont know what adjusting an envelope is and ADSR are but I will keep digging....any info will help...

no problem man, the video i thought you were referring to confuses the heck out of people new to the mpc cause its called realtime time stretch or something- and thats not actually what is going on at all, its such a common question i made the assumption that it was the same video.

as for the ADSR envelope, it stands for attack,decay sustain, release, you use it to shape a sound. a slow attack would start quieter and getter louder for instance (like a bowed violin) a drums starts loud(fast attack) and gets quiet pretty quick etc.

akai os and jj os1 just have Attack and Decay by the way. That should be enough though to shape a long sound into a short one like in the video.

Does anyone actually know how the 16 level function works? Akai claims it bumps the sample up and down semitones but how can it bump it a semitone when it doesn't know the original pitch of the sample? ( ie A semitone up from middle C is different distance then a semitone up from high C). What gives?

Playback speed is changed at intervals which causes the pitch to alter in semitones up or down. It does not have to know what pitch it is, it´s up to you to figure that out if you need the info.

In an equal temperment scale, an octave is made up of 12 equally spaced semitones. If you start at concert A (440 Hz) the octave A is at 880 Hz. Which means each semitone is 440/12. But if you go up an octave and start at 880 Hz A and go to A at 1760 Hz then a semitone is 880/12 which is not equal to 440/12.

Therefore, I believe Akai chooses some standard frequency (or speed) and adjusts semitones according to this standard tone (or speed) not the actual sample. Does anyone know what this is?

Actualyl no it's no. Pitch is logarithmic to a base of 2 (iirc.) An octave is always double the frequency (200%), no matter what the base note. Musical theory works on nice and neat fractions. A semitone is always +/- approx 5.9%. Etc.


1/1 unison C
2/1 octave C

3/2 perfect fifth G
4/3 fourth F

5/4 major third E
8/5 minor 6th Ab

6/5 minor 3rd Eb
5/3 major 6th A

9/8 major 2nd D
16/9 minor 7th Bb

15/8 major 7th B
16/15 minor 2nd C#

Again you are wrong. Equal temperament scale separates splits it such that each step has the same ratio, not the same change in frequency. Learn to read, or at least check your facts before commenting.
