Ok so after watching this I finally think I understand what the sequencer is.... basically its being able to use your MPC with PC /Mac? support. So all the live stuff you lay down in the MPC... can be easily changed in the PC. Kiss the cursor buttons goodbye!

These videos are starting to get me interested now... and I haven't sequenced on a PC in years.

Anyone else suprised he's not showing any equivalent to MIDI Grid mode?

JJ'S silent video's are always boring to me, this ain't 1920! I wish he would just let Nym do the explaining, but it's good to see progress. Just show me this software rendering the tracks as individual .WAV files, and I'm sold. I'm quite sure track rendering will be the #1 reason why anyone buys this sequencer.

this will never EVER happen. come on, man - think about it.
for this happen, JJ would have to re-create on the PC:

1. all the fx - delays, chorus, bit depth, reverb, etc. EXACTLY as they are on the MPC
2. all the filters, adsr, lfo's, pitch adsr... EVERYTHING in the PROGRAM screen - both sound & behavior
3. the 32 voice polyphony limit & how exactly it cuts off voices when you max it out.
4. simult sequence & all the little imperfections in the timing of the MPC that causes phasing when you simult.
5. all of the Q-LINK stuff, realtime & note on adjustments to pitch, sample start, filters, etc.

the list goes on... basically he would have to reprogram the ENTIRE MPC in windows from scratch (you can't just translate the code 1 to 1, the MPC runs on a cell phone chip & pc's run on intel or whatever. completely different code is required to talk to those processors.) and it's just not physically possible.

also, due to the limits of the MPC processor, you can't have the JJ sequencer app talk to the MPC in realtime over USB. this is why in the other video you see JJ transferring the sequences back and forth between his app and the MPC via a memory card. the processor can only do one thing at a time. in realtime you can do whatever MIDI allows you to do (trigger notes, change programs, etc...) but that's it.

this is why i keep saying people are going to be dissapointed by this app. they are expecting things from it that the MPC is just not capable of.

You remember that scene in Independence Day where Will Smith links his Powerbook to the Alien-Mainframe? So it IS possible!!!

Wow kids its a bog standard sequencer on a PC. I can't wait, think of the possibilities, you could errr trigger MIDI notes...

C-R-A-Z-Y, this is much more useful than bug fixes and updates to the 2XL OS.

Sooty G, you're the only one with your head screwed on right!

The sequence made from AKAI OS, JJ OS1, OS2, and OS2XL can be played back.
The sequence of MPC is reproduced only when a program, a sample, and the holder containing an ALL file are dragged and dropped with a mouse.
It is not read when only a PGM file is dragged and dropped. (In the future, it is due to make it possible.)

the program filter can be recreated with readout from an oscilloscope
amp envelope shouldn't be too hard, that's just math
mute groups shouldn't be difficult, and polyphony limit cutoff isn't necessary to reproduce, as it's not a true feature on the mpc and therefor there's no need to cap the limit on the sequencer

hopefully we'll see this app be able to recreate crossfades and looping - this data is in the wav when you bring it up on your pc

rendering individual tracks shouldn't be that difficult either. i imagine all realtime qlink data will not be registered, i'll be interested to see whether note on is registered

regardless, there are plenty of tracks in which pgm level params is all that's changed (like a simple tamborine hit) that this pgm could save you time tracking with if it gets that "render track"

if this is sample accurate it'll be a tracking dream

as for now the beta is far too mouse-driven for my tastes. hotkeys need to be assigned/user assignable. it's still young. "space" bar doesn't even make the thing play yet!

Yo this shit is hot!

Yo JJ, Please make this able to read MPC500 Programs too PLEASE!!!!!

Edit: Oh Shit :)

Yeah what Nym said, plus he has the code. Its not that hard to port this stuff, he is a competant programmer.
Sooty_G wrote:3. the 32 voice polyphony limit & how exactly it cuts off voices when you max it out.

Why would anyone really want either. Why couldn't he limit the polyphony in software?
Sooty_G wrote:5. all of the Q-LINK stuff, realtime & note on adjustments to pitch, sample start, filters, etc.

No different to midi control in software sequencers.

I think you're missing the point man. The software doesn't have to communicate over USB with the mpc. The theres no reason why the sequencer can't load the file formats of the mpc. He has the specs. There's plenty of open source code for stuff life amp envolpes, filters, lfo etc. Plus he already has the oringal code. No reason why it can't be done.
I'm not saying he could emulate stuff like sloppy timing or the DA's, but its not like the 1000 has a sound anyway. It wouldn't bother me if it was done it software, it could be very similar.

Yeah you might be right. But anyway, keep at it dude. You're doing a good job at speculating.

Not sure why this would fly mabe for the MIDI Akai device but this does nothing for me. Maybe for first timers good Idea tho Hardware is always better to work from Midi device seem to lag on slower clocked PC's..

I hope is is considering this on Windows 7 because that is the direction were headed and I hope it is coded for 64bit, 8GB.

Thanks

I'm no programmer...You could be right, or wrong, who knows. It doesn't matter what the MPC is capable of if the sequence and programs are loaded in the computer.. Actually, I'd expect more out the software than what the MPC can actually do. I'd like to have the option to use plugins/VST's eventually added to the software. I think JJ has pushed the 1000/2500 to it's limit, but with the computer, the sky is the limit.
There's so many ways that programmers can cheat when it comes to programming on the computer. Pre-made templates are available for all kinds of applications. I would think it should be easier to develop upgrades for the PC than the dated hardware in the MPC's. Think about it...if he wanted to add an eq, there are thousands of free eq-plugins that JJ wouldn't have to program. Audacity is open source and can read VST's
It maybe a lot easier than we think..
