Please, please can somebody help!!

Ok, I am a new MPC 1000BK owner, I bought it new off of amazon. I was so excited to receive it and had saved up for months. I had read the manual and hundreds of forum posts before I even got it...

THE PROBLEM:

So I was happily enjoying my new machine until I read the JJ OS was a lot better and smoother, so I promptly looked up the correct way to download it and so forth. Fine. I was loading up the JJ OS (free version) and everything seemed to load up ok, memory was formatted and I was on a clean slate.
I then go to load a sound (internal and also from memory card just to cover the bases) and the pads glitch up when I play! The sounds and pads aren't seeming to respond in sync with each other, or I'll press a pad and velocities are all over the place or a sound will be delayed...a complete mess.

I then revert back to AKAI's OS and the pads are fine again. (well I say fine but even at the highest velocity sensitivity, I still have to hit pretty hard to get 127.) also do the pads have to be hit pretty firmly to get any sound at all? Even on highest sensitivity? It seems so.
-anyway so everything seems to be back to normal.

I then hear that you should hit the [ERASE] button while switching power on, to avoid bugs while changing OS's. So i tried that, hoping to god that I could run JJOS properly.
Only nothing happened except when turning on while pressing erase, the text on the display window was barely visible! and to top it off the pads glitched again!! so now I couldn't read the text AND had glitchy pads

I then hurriedly went BACK to AKAI's OS and the text is still barely visible but the pads seem (normal) !

Do I have to get a new machine??! Or will one of you brilliant MPCers have the answer!?

I have never been so desperate....

well for the letters, try adjusting the contrast, i believe its stop+data wheel, if i remember correctly. as far as the pads go, i never really used the free jj os, but in os1 which i bought, you have to go to the pad settings, under "other" i think, and make sure you turn all the pads up to 25 and on the right hand side turn the "pad on" or something similar to that down to 1. after doing that my pads felt a million times more responsive, i remember with the akai os i pretty much had to have full level on all the time, but after gettin jj os1 and setting those settings i have no problems with sensitivity any more.

as far as the pad syncing issue, ive never run across that, maybe after loading jj os try doing a hard restart and then adjusting the contrast back to normal, see if your pads are better, if not, hopefully someone else on here can answer that one for ya man, good luck hope you get it worked out.

p.s. it dont sound like you necessarily have a bad 1k, more like its something to do with settings in the free jj os that im unaware of? not sure though

thanks for the reply, but the stop + data wheel has no response, it doesn't seem to register that, or holding erase while powering on. I did adjust the sensitivity on the free jjOS like you said to about 25 and went through all the motions, but same problem.

I would try downloading OS1 from http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/
It will let you load it and use it, only not be able to save, try loading that one clean and see if it still has the weird delay on the pads, might help troubleshoot the problem, other than that, ive never heard about pads not syncing with the sounds coming out, could just be some dumb setting im not thinking of, but my mp isnt here with me right now, otherwise i would check it out firsthand for ya. hopefully youll get it, im sure some others that are a little more familiar with all the settings will post some info for ya.

are you loading up programs made in akai os, and then using them in jj? if so there may be a compatability issue causing the pad problems. it might be worth making a quick program file in jj - and then checking the pads.

it could be that JJOS uses different PAD sensitivity setup where MPC1000BK (important bit= BK) are concerned. something to do with the later PAD designs used at AKAI since the red blue models were built, updated for the BK models, and JJ needed a further tweak to set HIS version of the PAD sensitivity pages in the OS.

thank you everyone for all your help, I just downloaded and paid for JJOS1 and everything seems to be working fine now. Still a lttile bit worried about the whether or not the actual machine is ok because I have no MPC to compare it to, but everything seems to be normal now. Although why the free JJOS didn't work I will not know. Also is there a signal or some kind of message when you restart the system? (ERASE + POWER ON) because Im not getting a thing.... Thank you everyone...

Upgraded pads are not compatible with free JJOS version and older akai OS's. You need either the updated akai OS or JJOS 1/JJOS 2

Just to confirm the OP's issues with Free JJOS and a new Black MPC1000...

I just bought a brand new one and the pads worked, felt great. I then installed the free JJOS and the pads, after extensive testing with Sensitivity and Pad On, was getting the same glitches as described above.

The sounds coming out in real time seemed to sync up well enough and sound fine, but when I would record a sequence it would play back all weird. The Velocity would either be full tilt, or al the way down to 1 or 3.

Interesting comment above about the factory Akai programs. I'll try creating my own program and report back to see if JJOS has trouble talking to Akai created programs, it definitely seems like it's just recording the hits incorrectly as opposed to initiating them incorrectly.

Following up on my last post...

I tried creating some Programs from scratch using the free JJos and the same errors were occurring (dropped hits when recording sequences). I even loaded in my own samples and avoided using any stock assets that shipped with the MPC. Still errors.

I ended up re-installing the original OS and everything now works great. The lack of grid-edit is kind of a bummer but I'm going to stick with the Akai OS until I outgrow it and then skip straight to one of the pay versions of the JJos.

I know "faze1" stated that the Free JJOS not compatible with upgraded MPCs in an earlier response, but since I was experiencing the same issues as the OP I figured I would at least test a few work-arounds just to make sure... thanks faze1 and all the rest for the suggestions.
