DATA WHEEL: Broken or Software.......

Hey,
Im having an issue whith my data wheel and i need some clarification before i decide to buy a replacement.
When i turn the DW it doesnt seem very responsive, it does move but not accuratly,
if i spin the DW it miss many clicks before "kicking in" then one it starts to move it will jump backwards a few clicks then forward again, and to get this to work i need to spin it really fast,
if i spin in slowly most of the time i can do a full 360* rotation before it wil move a click or so,
if i turn it really slowly, say one click per second it wont respond at all!
I started to experiecne this a while back and it seemed to start after installing JJos,
I think he did do some OS updates that were ment to fix the issue but it never fixed it completely.

Is anyone elses data wheel like this?
Do you think its software related?
Do you think the datawheel is broken?
Do your data wheels become better after replacing them?

Hope someone can shed some light on this issue,

Did you try the different data wheel types in the mode->other menu?

I'm using a 2500, as far as I know we didn't get that option,
only the 1000 did!
I sent a request/bug report to jj, to see if he will add it.

I have had my 2500 for about 4years.
But the issue did start after sone jjos updates!

So u think it's a software bug?

if possible default back to akai os and try it.

Sounds to me like a hardware issue. Try the Akai OS first, but I can't imagine one software download being different from others. Good luck.

my guess is hardware too. My 1000 data wheel went after about 2-3 years... After lots of sample chopping i might add!

i decided to buy a new data wheel!
There not that expensive,
plus it will give me a chance to look at my old one and try a modification,
I want to stop the terrible noise they make!!!

What´re you gonna get?
The wheel wont help much, you need the rotary encoder beneath it.
Basically im in the same situation (after re-reading your description), I´m trying to get the data encoder but so far havent been able to get one...
Even vst doesnt seem to have them and the german akai dealers i contacted so far couldnt give me clear information if they can get the part for me, so far.

I had an order in for an MPC1000 rotary encoder recently and they were very helpful but could not source the part. Said they would update me if the situation changed.

sim-026mt encoder has been on back order for about ten months now.
i've checked with akai, vst, and mpcstuff. i've contacted various
online parts outlets and they do not have the encoder either.

the only current solution i know of is to buy another mpc.

thats at least a $450 solution to what should be $10 fix.

any better ideas please post

clarification:
i'm refering to the encoder for the mpc 1000 not 2500

I got an encoder just yesterday (after 6 weeks of waiting) from Musicstore. Other retailers i contacted had trouble getting the parts (or maybe they just didnt care), but the guy at Musicstore told me he got them from Akai Germany.

Just an update:
I have installed the new encoder in my 2500 and it works perfectly!
each single click is once single data input, its like having a new mpc!
