how Jamie XX use the mpc in live shows

hi guys,

ive seen the XX live and it seems like Jamie can bang his mpc in real time like a tradional drum kit while always being tight on the rhythm and also triggering longer wavey samples throughout the whole track... does he use some kind of real time quantization or has he just got a good rhythm sense and a lot of practice?

Back to the OP though, It would be handy if you provided a link to some footage so we could see for ourselves. From the way you describe it he could be playing samples using the baile funk technique.
Depending what else he has in his setup will also affect how hes using the Mpc.

I saw them twice at the same festival a couple of months back, he was using three 1000s at the time. Couldn't quite see, but the beats were certainly being tapped out live, presumably the other two being used for pads and fx. Super super tight beats, although they're not massively complex patterns.

When they played "Fantasy" my eyes were literally shaking in my skull, i've never felt sub like it. I thought the roof was going to collapse.

The Baile Funk Technique is just including loops on some of your pads and one hits on others I understand. So you would have a hat loop and play the snares and kicks alongside that.

i watched that youtube vid and the guy isn't doing anything a million other cats have done: just banging out the beats live on the pads. if you have any rhythm at all or can play regular drums (like this guy) then it's not that hard to do. no different than what a live drummer does in any band.

but snoop around on youtube a bit. i've seen vids of people doing live stuff that blows my mind and is a thousand times more difficult than what this XX guy is doing. checkout 'araabMUZIK' for starters.

This so-called "bail funk technique" is what people with samplers have been doing for decades. I hate it when people start putting a name to simple and obvious ways of using your kit to make music. It's like they think they invented the techniques all of a sudden.

on that video the kicks and snares are one shots, the percussion parts seem to be two or more hits strung together on one pad.
