Recording on the MPC while synchronizing to Cubase??

Hi guys,

couldn't find it on the forum, so I ask for your help now..

I managed to sync my MPC1000 (JJ OS2) to Cubase 5. So far it's great. But the Mpc won't record the events that I'm playing on the Mpc while playing in sync mode.

Example so you can understand what i'm talking about:

While playing a beat in cubase synced with the mpc, i want to record new events that i play "live" on the mpc (so i don't want Cubase to record, i want the mpc to record the new events)


I hope you understand my problem: Recording my mpc-output in Cubase is not my problem.
i want to record on the mpc while playing synced.

I guess this must be possible!?

shouldnt it be like this?:

u set the mpc in rec arm, (ie hold down the rec button),
while u hit 'start' in cubase,
the mpc would start in sync, and recording.

and the sequence in record will default to 'odub' when the cycle length of that seq occurs.

and if 'odub' is held instead of 'rec', in sync overdubs are possible.

beware that if cubase isn't in record, (ie no count in), u get the start of sync and the mpc leaps straight into record (with no count in despite what it says in the mpc 'click'/count in settings).

This sounds so easy, but i really tried out for hours and didn't get it to work that way...

So, now another thing that I don't know how to do:

I'm quite sure remember that i already had this working on my mpc like this:

I have my mpc slaved to cubase and MMC is turned on. This works pretty fine, all i am missing is that the tempo (i'm talking about the bpm value) is getting the information from cubase.

Right now the tempo is still "local", so it does not get the information from the external source.
The synchronisation is working, but can the mpc take the tempo-value from external-sources, too?

Are you using beat clock to synchronize? The reason I ask is because beat clock is tempo dependent on the master device. If you use midi time code (MTC) then it won't matter what tempo cubase is set at because MTC is based off of absolute time (hours:minutes:seconds:frames)

I'm using Midi Time Code (MTC) and what you say about it using absolute time seems to make sense.
Had some problems with midi clock before (don't want to bother you guys with that) which i managed to solve right now and so you're right, it works!

So it almost looked like i got it, but now my mpc is running exactly twice as fast as Cubase, even if the tempo-field shows "ext" for external source! Why the hell is that?!?

make sure that its not getting the tempo info twice, like it can happen if mpc receives tempo info, but the host is getting the mpc tempo and as a loop it creates double the values.......

i never use mmc or mtc, i use beat clock, so my reasoning may be off.

my mpc is slaved to cubase, but the mpc is sending mmc. But I guess thats ok, isnt it?
I don't have any other midi-equipment or similar connected.

So I guess it can't be a "loop-issue", am I right?

I tried out all possibilities with the mpc sending/receiving mmc, and also both at the same time, mpc as master/slave, but it always plays at doubled tempo...

'ext ' means the mpc is definitely slaved and receiving external tempo or clock source, i'm no wizz with cubase - only logic sorry, but it does seem like the tempo/sync info is coming from cubase twice, its mbe via a midi interface thats merging two or distributing streams of midi sync data perhaps? vague, but its something that happened to me once.

OR its simply that u are now running both midi clock and timecode? would that cause twice the tempo?

anyone else lurking out there with ideas?

Yeah this problem is too difficult to troubleshoot over a forum because we don't have enough information. There's no telling how your sync setting are configured in the mpc or in cubase, especially cubase because there's so many options that could have been selected/ de-selected.
My only advice is to revert the cubase sync settings to default and follow the mpc sync guide, found here: http://www.akaipro.com/tipsmay09

Ok, I guess you're right.

So first of all, I'm going to check on the "loop-issue" again, as I now realised that Cubase recognises my Midi-Interface as new hardware every time i plug it in via usb (So when selecting midi ins/outs, cubase lists my interface several times.. ). So I guess this could cause the problem.

If it turns out that this is not the problem than I'll probably post some screenshots of my main cubase sync configurations.

Ok, now it's working!

The problem was that Cubase had my midi-interface both running as "windows midi" and "direct music".
This somehow caused the MPC to run at twice the speed of Cubase.

As I deactivated one (no matter which one) of the two input-options in the midi-setup-dialogue, it now works fine at the correct speed.
