Swing?

First off: I use JJ OS on my MPC1000.

The more I read about beat making, the more I hear about "swing".

I know my MPC can do it because I feel like I've seen it before. I'm also under the assumption that "swing" moves (a note/all notes/selected notes? off of the quantized space).

My question is: how do I turn on swing and what exactly is its purpose?

Is this how some producers get that "late" or "early" snare?

Also, what are some of the more common scenarios where swing would be beneficial?

hello,

For the swing function you can go to the TC window and change its values (50 to 75). If you want to hear how it has a direct influence on the sound just use NOTE REPEAT with a pad at 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32.

for "late" or "early" check shift timing and also check quantize strength if you got a recent version of JJ OS and if you have more and more interest in stuff related to quantize.

yes, bring quantize strength down to about 50. TC is unrealistically rigid unless you're making certain types of electronica. a 100% strong TC sound in hip hop music is cheesy in 2010 unless you've got a lot of extra stuff going on to give the beat a more natural groove. or unless you're specifically trying to create music that sounds like it's from the early 90s. TC is important, but just like anything else it can be abused.

There are still few things I don't understand...

1) if the swing track specific or sequence specific?

2) if I record some notes with the swing set to ex. 65 and than go to TC screen and change the walue to 75, or change the strength, do I have to apply it some how?

3) is the swing binded to quantisation (note value parameter in the TC scren...)? - I mean when I change the parameters in TC screen for a pad to be quantised to note value 1/8 and change the swing from 65 to 75 are both actions performed after pressing FIX or is the FIX button only related to the note value????

there's a "do it" button or something. i don't know, ask the fingers on my right hand.

yes, swing is bound to quantisation.

I got JJ OS like....18 months ago.

Where would quantize strength be?
