HARD DRIVE PROBLEM

im hoping someone out there knows why my SAMSUNG HM160HC wont format properly on the MPC JJOS1
ive tried every weird suggestion formatting it this way and that, formatting it here and there... everywhere
every way that i know of. ive searched the forum and i just cant find a solution.

drive seems to work fine hooked up to a computer... MPC sees its there, acts like it formats, occasionally manages to write something to the drive (seems so) but ONLY file not found and system errors when trying to reload them

i HAVE formatted with JJOS1 4.99l and various other ways... but mostly with 4.99l as thats what is recommended

i think im gonna try to return the drive (and maybe the adapter kit) if i cant find the solution, ugh...
nothing like paying 150$ for adapt kit and drive just to annoy yourself for a week (or more, tick tock)

any or all help appreciated.

It's been like 5 years since I installed my drive. But if I remember correctly, you'll need to remove the jumper from the back of the drive if theres one there. This way it's seen as a master and not a slave. Check that out and see if it helps.

i just installed 160 gb hard drive no problem.

i originally had 80 gb hard drive installed on my mpc and it was almost full, so i wanted to transfer everything from that drive to my new drive. I bought an external enclosure because i figured once i installed my new drive, i could use the external enclosure for my old drive. also, i was able to use the external enclosure to format my new drive and transfer all my old data to that new ddrive using usb 2.0 (i back up all my data on mpc to my computer so data was already on computer). once i formated the new drive and transfered data to it, i put it in my mpc.

anyways, you may not have an old drive installed on your mpc, but the idea is the same.

1.buy exteranl 2.5 ide hardrive enclosure (they cheap as hell $10 bucks or less)
2.connect your new harddrive to enclosure
3.connect to pc
4.format hardrive using your pc (you will need a 3rd party software to do this because of a windows limitation when formating fat32 *see below)
5.drag all data onto newly formatted harddrive (if you have any on your computer)
6.remove hard drive from enclosure
7.install hard drive into mpc


*mpc needs harddrive to be formated fat32. if you try to use windows to format it like you would any other drive, if you using win xp you can format it ntfs or fat32. problem is, windows only allows you do format up to 32gb. so in order to format larger sectors, you need to download some third party software you can run with cmd window and format the drive. I have screen shots and download links in my work email. ill update this post with the correct stuff.

thanks for the thoughts... i dont think i saw any jumper. but i will certainly look again

i will also look into the fat 32...
anyone know what kind of format a mac makes if you choose ms-dos fat for format?
do i need to use an actual windows machine then? why wouldnt the MPC/JJOS format it?

well if mac does fat 32 when ms-dos format is selected, then i have tried that too... sigh

curious if this is fairly common problem with hard drives not formatting?
and STILL looking for/needing a solution. if there is one.
