I wasn't being specific to akai, but the music tech industry (and its parent electronics industry) as a whole. But regardless of how horrible you may consider Akai's support to be, its still there and it still costs money. Money which comes, ultimately, from sales. Money which is not reinvested into R&D. (Again, just being the devil's advocate)
With respect to backwards compatibility, I can say this. Having used a 60mkII, then a 3000, when I decided to go with the 1000, it was already second nature before I even unboxed it. That's intentional.
big companies are simply no longer the best option for many software products anymore.
We agree there. With respect to software (and this is another advantage JJ has) the risk to reward ratio is MUCH lower. Not having to develop hardware (and assume all the risks that go with that), means the playing field is levelled between the big guys and the small development teams.
Reputations are just that. Prime example is Dell. Reputedly excellent customer support. Until you find out you need to spend $25k for them to actually let you talk to a real live human being

Another consideration is that the small outfits have a much more personal attachment to the product. that means they take pride in supporting their customers. The big boys, they pay some stiff (who probably didn't originate the code and therefore isn't as familiar as he should be with it) to maintain and update the code, and another stiff to answer the phones.
At the end of the day, neither is inherently better than the other. The big guys and the little guys both work with a set of restraints. And at the end of the day, they both provide the marketplace with products that you and I use. I could easily point out the vast seas of abandonware... Or the legions of pure craptastic software out there. But that wasn't the point of my post.
man the big software/hardware company bubble has POPPED. imo if it takes a salesman to sell the product, i ain't buyin.
I suggest you look around your studio, and then the rest of your house, garage, closet, etc. and make note of all the brand names.

I guarantee you there's at least one big brand name in your studio. There's probably at least five, but I'll guarantee one...
