Just found this out. IN a drum program the filter envelope release stage will not effect the cutoff, it will just stay at the sustain level with env depth set full or partially, or negatively. I reported this to JJ,

Damn yall don;t use envelope's? How long has this been a bu I wonder.

I hope it gets fized in 1.47 and 2.06. I want to keep 1.47 for a while.

Works fine here... Are you sure you have don't have it set to "one shot"? It needs to be set to "note on" for the release stage to be enabled, Otherwise it is really an Attack-Decay-Sustain envelope.

Makes sense when you think about it. The release stage is what the envelope does after you release a key, but in 'one shot' mode the key is essentially pressed and released instantaneously. If the release stage were active it would be the only thing you heard....

hope this helps

Yes it works in note on mode, but the release of the amp envelope works in one shot mode, set a loop within the sample and set amp release to 100. It keeps going just after one tap of the pad. The filter release does not. It should. Each loop would then be filtered at the rate of the filter env release and would reduce in volume at the amp env release rate. Do you get me?

Okay, just want to make sure this is correct. The filter envelope just controls the contour and dynamics of the filter and not the dynamics of the sample itself, right? I've never used the filter envelopes but now you got me interested.

Ah, you're right. The behavior of the Filter envelope does not follow that of the Amp Env when a sample is set to note on. The behavior of the envelopes seems to be a bit inconsistent in general after some poking around. I can't see any scenario I couldn't use a workaround(for example setting the sustain to zero and using the decay instead of the release for the filter) but it does seem to be a bug.

Off topic, is it just me or do the envelopes actually seem a bit more "snappy" in v2.06?

Mp3: I'm pretty sure it isn't intended because you can have that behavior by just setting filter envelope release to zero. As it stands you can change the release value but it doesn't change the envelope release time. So that looks like a bug to me. Release even has an off value just past 100.

Patchin : glad you see what I mean. This really should be fixed as it is like a broken control. The work around you mention would work in some cases but not in others, like with a looping element. The envelopes in drum mode seem faster than the ones in instrument mode but I need to check more carefully.

Patchen, you're right, that you can use the decay stage in oneshot mode as a work around for release, but that limits the envelopes inherent flexibility.

I think I know what happened, Thr filter envelope release time has a setting of 'OFF' when you go past 100, the amp envelope doesn't have this in 1.47. I think when this was implemented it mistakenly shut off the Filter Envelope release altogether.

Thanks for checking into it people, and thanks for the work around Patchen.

[FILTER]
Although PLAY MODE is ONE SHOT, it is in the state which can set a release.

When PLAY MODE is ONE SHOT, the release of FILTER does not work. (cannot be set)

I'm speechless! I want to buy that man a sapporo!

I'm going to play a bit more with the envelopes in this mode and see if there is a difference using decay or using release. I feel like in oneshot mode the decay should start at the beginning of the sample (MPC 60/3000, decay Start) and the Release should start at the end of the sample and work backwards (MPC 60/3000, decay END) but I am not sure. In any case BIG UP to JJ and taking care of business like a champ.

Also, if you all are not using the envelopes on your drums and one shots, give it a chance, it really makes a difference and allows a lot of flexibility with volume, filter and pitch so you don't have to tie up your 1 q-link to do that kind of modulation.

It sounds to me like he is saying that the filter envelope release still 'does not work' in one shot mode.

In other words, previously you could set the release, although it had no effect (which is what I thought), and now it still has no effect, but you just can't set it.

Hi,

I'm not yet ready to use enveloppes as I'm quite new to the mpc/JJOS, just yet learning the basics and a bit focusing on midi sequencing with external synth,

but this discussion does interest me as I'm not new to enveloppes in other gear, and I just found this with OS XL update 2.08:

Bug Fixes: MPC2500 OS-XL Ver2.08 28-JAN-2011
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. [TRIM]

[RING MODULATION]
A stereo sample works only on the left.

2. [PROGRAM]

[INST]
[NON-OVERLAP]
An autoset is not carried out when a note name is lower case letters.

3. [PROGRAM]

[FILTER]
Although PLAY MODE is ONE SHOT, it is in the state which can set a release.
Note
When PLAY MODE is ONE SHOT, the release of FILTER does not work. (cannot be set)

so with 2.07 and 2.08, JJ seems to have gone deeper with these features bugfixing and explanations,

Release parameter WORKS for volume enveloppe when play mode is one shot,
Release parameter does NOT work for filter enveloppe when play mode is one shot.

Am I right?

cheers

No sapporro for JJ. Motherfvcker took the release parameter away in oneshot mode on filter envelope! But the amp envelope has a release and it is very useful with looped samples. The problem with using the decay is that on longer samples it kicks in before the sample is done.

How I would like it to work is for the release stage to kick in after the sample reaches the end of playback and then as it loops around the release can fade out the filter at a different rate than the amp stage. This is how the amp envelope works in oneshot mode.

I guess I'll just have to use note on and hold the pad like I have nothing better to do.

Damn.... I got distracted yesterday (in a good way ;)) so I never got around to updating.
Thanks for the heads up elmac. 8)
