a while back I was a bit into programing (Flash, Director), but C++, hmm...

so the MPC1000/2500 has a similar structure as a PC? There is only the bios and the OS? Could a bios upgrade allow for more RAM capacity?

---

I always wanted to have a netbook without any OS; just bios and the program I need to run, e.g. Ableton Live. But I guess that ain't possible 'cause of the necessary dll's, etc....

the os maybe written in C++ but there's a firmware/bios chip(or two) that loads the OS and does basic stuff, hence BASIC INPUT OUTPUT SYSTEM and i doubt that is written in C++ its probably in ASM for what ever CPU the MPC uses.

that would be nice, you wouldn't be able to run existing windows programs, theres too much linked into to system dll's and stuff, you could hookup a basic os kernel and then run stuff on top of that, but by the time you write library's to handle all the stuff you need, GFX/Display, Sound Card drivers, keyboard/mouse io. your getting into the realms of a full os like windows. but having said that you wouldn't need all the networking stuff and other bits. maybe a heavily modified linux?

coding for the MPC would be like: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9781565923546 There would be a vendor-provided or in house set of tools to compile the code into assembler suitable for the device.

-> Dell mini 9 or 10v with OSX on it? Ableton runs ok on that.

!!! haha nice.

the fact that the os itself is in C++ has me hoping that at some point jj will release some basic "blank slate" os as open source and let the community have at it for specific functions that are not covered in his os's.

maybe by then my C++ will progress beyond "childish plans" to "super villain scheme status"

That's the day Akai goes after JJ and tries to shut him down. Would be dope though.
