Hello.

This is a very technical question and maybe only JJ can answer. But I'll give it a go!

MPC Setup:
Multi timbre mode.
Lots of program with assigned program numbers, responds to Program Change.

Also:
I have a couple of synths connected via Midi to the MPC. Sometimes I'll play MPC-programs sometimes I'll play sounds on the actual synths.

Problem:
I can not always control whether program change messages are sent to the MPC or not. Therfore MPC-programs might get selected on some channels/tracks that I don't want.

Two solutions that deactivates the playing of local program files on the MPC:
Activate MUTE on those tracks.
Change track type to Audio.

QUESTION:
Anyone who knows if there's a difference in the strain applied to the MPC in these two cases? I'd prefer to chose the method that minimize the strain of course. Maybe someone has tried and made some discoveries?

If by strain you mean how much processor load is put on the MPC, I'd bet that audio uses less. But muting seems more flexible - that would be the way I'd go.

On the other hand, have you considered using multiple copies of sequences to store the programs, rather than changing the track type or muting them? That might be easier, plus you can use the Next Seq screen to change it quickly (up to 64 sequences). That is, if I understand correctly what you're trying to do.

Thanks.
Yes I'll use multiple sequences also. But this setup is for improvising and it would be convenient to use Program Change on my midi hardware to select new programs while still in the same sequence.

Anyway, I'll just have to try and see if there are any issues with either mute or "audio". I noticed none of the methods consumes "ghost voices" so there're probably no big issues with either of them.
