So I was having a ton of fun the other night with the Adventure Kid waveforms loaded up in my MPC. I have a reasonably good and surprisingly versatile synth now :) I like the idea of using my MPC standalone (no computer, etc.) so this helps, big time.

I'm using OS1 at the moment so I've been able to have a good time with the envelopes and filters (still need to dig in there a bit more) but was wondering if I was missing out on any features that OS2XL brings to the table for sample-based synthesis.

You're missing out on INST programs, crossfade looping, a handful of Q-Link realtime parameters, the arpeggiator, and chord mode. Among other things.

INST programs map samples to keyranges, as opposed to normal programs that map a sample to each pad. There are differences between the various versions as far as how q-links are implemented, but IIRC, OS1 doesn't have the realtime q-link parameters.

There's a comparison chart here: http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/chart.htm
