is there any way at all to be able to nudge (for example) a snare hit slightly forward or backwards while the sequence is playing in a loop?

Yes is the dopest way to lay out beats and other things. I spend heaps of time in these windows, more than any other sometimes. Golfdogz - you can still hold mode and turn jog wheel in this mode to change tracks, with out going out of the screen. Also note that you can use << >> to jump back a bar and to next bar in loop mode. So this way you can stay in these screens and lay out a few bars over a few tracks.

ive tried to use that screen with what looks like a bunch of vertical rectangles before, but i still dont really get how it works, do you find it easier to use than grid edit?

is there a basic drum loop i could lay out to help me digest it easier?
ive tried to figure out that screen before but didnt really know what i was doing.

It works with grid edit really. It is same principle, in that its 16 steps in a bar. The lines are a visual guide of the note velocities, So taller the rectangle, higher the velocity, which usually means louder note volume. So it is useful to see velocity info. Under that is the numbers for nudging note forward/backward, and of course duration is how long the note is.

4 to the floor, is the best to start, a kick on every beat (1, 5, 9, 12). After putting in a 4 to the floor kick pattern (with a short hard low kick so you can hear the highs), use a clap on the 2nd and 4th beat (5, 12). Now nudge the claps back and forth and see how you can change the feel. So if you move the claps forward it should feel a bit more urgent, and if you move just the claps a bit later by shifting the clap a few ticks, should seem a bit more groovy or laid back. depending of course on other stuff that you can add. But this is probably the easiest and simplest demonstration of the JJOSXL grid edit beat making using that 1 Bar Edit Mode window in grid edit.
Tempo plays a part here, and you will find that if you shift tempo a lot, it will change that grooves feel, and may not work the same.
And if you find a pattern that you made is really good and you want save it you can - see line patterns.
So now you got no excuse damien907, get into it and make some beats.
Today I used this to make a bass line with a synth. I leave it in drum mode and set midi channel so notes go out to synth. Perfect for trance/acid tekno, that kinda thing. So try that after you make beat, do a simple bass line with one note with that tekno beat. :hmmm: start at 150bpm and go hard. Its probably easy to hear the shifts in timing at a higher tempo as well. I use it a lot to do stuff like this for illustration purposes I will post a track.. I am sure after a while you will be able to do any style with this. Like I said I use it a lot.

I've never used this function before, so just a simple question : is this working regardless of TC?

For my needs, I sometimes use step edit with the HOLD function, but mainly grid edit with the MOVE function and the UNDO key ( when you move one thing you often have to move something else and it's easy to compare with the UNDO function) I wish there was a HOLD button in grid edit for very long loops but this request doesn't seem very popular :(

Depends le rat. yes and no. if notes entered with TC are used then the grid edit will show this. And of course TC can be changed in realtime in grid edit mode, but not in loop edit mode. So If you use grid edit loop mode you can just hit pad to remove or enter note event. But if you want TC then use step edit and make turn on the note step. Hit window in grid edit, so you can enter notes that are to the TC in the sequence. this is after hitting stop + record. So TC effects the notes entered in step mode when stop + record is hit then you can turn on loop mode, hit window and change notes as it plays. Some times you will not be able to use pad to remove a note event, this is because that event is in between the places the pads mark. If this happens they can be removed when stopped, and then re-entered.
Long loops :hmmm: good question! I use the loop edit for up to 16 bars to program variations in stuff. But I know that you le rat are meaning more so about long samples and moving them in sequences. Well there is loop function, I use that at same time. So set loop then edit and it will stay around that bit of song and not play whole song so i have to wait. But this is not solution. Im up way too late so will sleep on it, lol
