Hi guys,

today I started to prepare a liveset on my MPC1000 with JJOS1 (v5.0). Now I wonder how I can switch from one sequence to another without stopping the playback? JJOS doesn't seem to allow this, or am I wrong?

The only solution I found is using the song mode, but this isn't useful either, because it doesn't allow to modify anything (sounds, effects etc) while playing. And if I want to jump from one sequence to another manually before the first one is finished I can only use the SUDDEN button. But his instantly switches to the next one, without regard for the right timing.

Is there any solutions to simply switch between sequences without stopping or losing the timing?

Thanks,
Marco

Alright, I opened my eyes and found the NEXT SEQ button on my MPC... yeah, shame on me.

So if anyone had the same problem: press NEXT SEQ and set the mode in the upper right corner to IMMEDIATELY PLAY. Now you can change to the next sequence just in time.

Hmmm... have to re-open this issue as the IMMEDIATELY PLAY mode doesn't work as I think it should...

Example: when sequence 1 is at bar 100 and I switch to sequence 2 it plays further from bar 100. So I switch to IMMEDIATELY START instead, but in this mode sequence 2 starts insantly, not waiting for the next measure to start, so my outboard gear loses its timing. And when END OF SEQUENCE is chosen, I can't switch between sequences manually.

Isn't there an option to switch whenever I want but in the right timing?

If I understand you correctly, no.

I requested a feature to allow something like you describe (in essence, quantized Immediate Start) and was under the impression that it'd be included on a future update. That was well over a year ago. The Yamaha RM1X sequencer has a function like this which "quantizes" the next sequence to the next 16th bar. It's handy.

Yep, it's a pity that the MPC is so limited in this case.

The only thing I just had in mind is to add another sequence which contains the last 4-8 bars of the playing sequence. It starts when the first sequence is finished. This 4-8 bar sequence loops until I decide to change to the next one.

Anyway, the RM1x behaviour is more logical to me, maybe we get it sometime.

go to the mute screen.......i swear this is covered in the JJOS1 page but oh well.

make sure the "sequence name" is highlighted (up the top)

turning the data wheel when the sequence is playing will click it to next sequence, which will play when the current sequence stops.

Only works in mute screen.

Mute screen is the best place for live sequencing too, so it should be fairly flexibile for live use

Tom, it's working similar to all other places, next sequence plays when the playing sequence is finished. I'd need a mode where I can switch to the next sequence ANY TIME but in the RIGHT TIMING :)

nah got no idea how to do that, even triggering with quantise of 16th like with the RMX, if your out, its going to be VERY noticable.....

The RM1x can quantize the pattern change to the next measure too, not only 16th. You can select the next pattern any time and it will start on the beginning of the next measure. Similar to Ableton.

Hey Scherer,

Last year I created a kinda complicated way of doing this using pad mutes and MIDI out to MIDI in. I had two settings: eight and sixteenth bar. It worked well, but the set-up was a pain. That was before pattern-to-pad was introduced to JJOS, so perhaps it'd be easier to do now. I can revisit this and post some info if you are interested.

Yeah, if you don't mind :)

you could also just make variations of sequences you already have and trim them to less bars... say you have a 4 bar loop that you sometimes only want to play the 1st bar of... just copy the sequence and change the length to 1 bar instead of 4... then you can select those shorter ones in your next sequence screen when needed. could be a bit tedious but a definite work around. on the bright side, you can even use/arrange those 1 bar sequences in SONG mode, so they come in handy.

That's the idea I wrote somewhere before, yes. To cut the last 4 bars of a sequence and copy it to another one. When the long sequence ends it switches to the 4 bar sequence which repeats until I'm ready to switch. A bit work to setup but should do fine.
