MMC/MTC settings in JJOS2XL manual

My set up right now is: mophokey synth (master) --> MIDI --> MPC1000 JJOS2XL (slave)

My initial interest was to be able to command the playing of a (saved and loaded) MPC sequence by playing notes on the synth (as master).

And so I "discovered" the MMC/MTC CLOCK section of the JJOS2XL manual ....

I played with the settings in this section, but no matter what i tried so far (playing on my mophokey either free notes or full sequences/arpeggios) I cannot seem to be able to start the playing of such MPC sequence with the synth. Is it even possible ?

The MMC/MTC section seems to indicate this is possible, but did I understand correctly ? I find this section a bit involved

Anybody could tell me if/how what I am trying to do is possible ? (And maybe explain a bit the difference and use of MMC vs MMT)

MMC is MIDI Machine Control, used to operate the transport controls (Play/Stop/Forward/Rewind) of one device from another device.

MTC is MIDI Time Code, used to send a time location from one device (Master) to another device (Slave), so the second device can play along at the same time locations as the first device.

Forget them both, your Mopho does not use either MMC or MTC.


What you might do, is to use the Mopho keyboard as a MIDI keyboard to input MIDI notes into the MPC sequencer, and use the Mopho inbuilt sound engine as a MIDI sound module that is played from the MPC sequencer.

To do this, you connect the Mopho MIDI output to the MPC MIDI input, the MPC MIDI output to the Mopho MIDI input, and then turn Local MIDI to OFF in the Mopho settings.

This will disconnect the MIDI note on/off data that is normally send internally from the Mopho keyboard to the Mopho sound engine, and send it out to the MPC instead. And instead of the Mopho sound engine being triggered directly/internally by MIDI note on/off data from the Mopho keyboard, it is only triggered from external MIDI note on/off data coming into the Mopho from the MPC.


As well as using MIDI to send MIDI note on/off data from the Mopho keyboard to the MPC sequencer, and from the MPC sequencer to the Mopho sound engine, you can also send MIDI Beat Clock (MIDI Clock) from the MPC sequencer to the Mopho sound engine, to synchronize the tempo of the Mopho sequencer to the tempo of the MPC sequencer.

This MIDI Beat Clock (MIDI Clock) is different again to MMC and MTC, it transmits the tempo from one device to another, and allows the tempo of two devices to be synchronized.

I must mention a few things:

There are 2 sequencers here: mophokey and MPC.
The sounds that I play on mophokey are NOT those used on my MPC sequences (which are mostly drum tracks) ie these 2 are used for different things.

In other words I want my playing the synth to be independent of the MPC except for 2 things: one, playing the synth triggers the playing of a MPC drum sequence, and 2, of course I need beat syncing the MPC (beat/drum sequence) with the mophokey own sequencer (used for synth sounds).

Do you mean that mophokey is incompatible with MMC ?
I ask this because your definition of MMC seems pretty close to what I want to do.

You can still play the Mopho sounds, with the Mopho keyboard, in the same way you normally would, in my example above, by having the active MPC track set to the Mopho MIDI output.

It is then doing the same thing as you normally do with the Mopho, except it is going through the MPC.

The internal Mopho step sequencer would still operate the same way it does now, but you would have the option to sequence the Mopho from the MPC sequencer.

But that sounds like it is more than what you want, and you may want to play MPC or other sounds, from the MPC, at the same time as the Mopho, which might not work.


To sync the Mopho sequencer to the MPC sequencer, you set the Mopho clock to MIDI In, and you send MIDI clock from an MPC MIDI output to the Mopho MIDI input.

From the manual, it does not seem that the Mopho sequencer responds to start/stop commands, so MMC is not going to apply, and is therefore not implemented...

Mopho’s sequencer is a gated sequencer.
That means it requires a note to be gated on—that is played from the keyboard, the Push It button, or via MIDI—in order for the sequencer to run. There is no dedicated start or play button and it does not respond to MIDI start/stop/continue messages, but it can still sync to an external clock. Simply turn on the sequencer and then play and hold a note to start. Or use the Push It button’s toggle feature to latch a note on with one push and release it with another; in this case, the Push It button is essentially a Start/Stop control.

It is more of a basic single track step sequencer, rather than a full multitrack MIDI sequencer like the MPC.

Sending MIDI Clock from the MPC to the Mopho will allow you to sync the Mopho sequencer to the MPC tempo, as well as the Mopho LFO and arpeggiator.
