howdy.

just bought an mpc-1000 with jjosxl.

doing research, it would seem that you can input q-link with cc from another device.

http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/os2xl/button.htm

is there any truth to this? i would absolutely like to control the sample start offset with a cc. any chance of this?

i hope im not thinking wishfully.

btw i am sequencing the mpc with an elektron monomachine and would like to take full advantage of parameter locks if you get me drift. so far its a wonderful way to 'add' that xox flavor to the unit.

does anyone have any decent tricks regarding making the mpc do backflips with midi input alone?

yes, but it's very restricted use. "Button" MIDI input it's only passed on one selected channel (1-16), and while works very fine with doing track mutes, solos (or other buttons) on MPC in mutitimbral mode ..(i.e. you can mute/solo from controller being on any track and in any MPC window).. it will be problematic with q-links which are set for each program. Meaning it would only pass CC>q link on predefined channel.
^^this in mutitimbral set on MPC

On so called "non-channel" operation the same setting will also work, BUT you will have to change a track on MPC (active track) to make it respond to q-link on desired program/ track.. than it's not important which channel is set for "button" feature, because active track matters and it has to be set to receiving ALL channels in MIDI tab.

Could you expand, I'm not getting what you mean.

so are you saying i have cc > q-link control on a fixed channel at best and at worst i need to have the active channel set to the q-link i want to tweak?

i guess as long as i can tweak 1 kit with that trick thats enough really!

i would love to mess around with manipulating layers as well. are we able to layer samples? can we tweak the sample start on all layers at once then switch between layers all with cc? and then of course directly control the filter and cutoff with independent cc's

are you familiar with elektron the hardware synth/sequencer company? they make a device called the monomachine that has a unique sequencer on it that is not only very precise timing wise, but allows special manipulation of controllers per step, they call it 'parameter locks'... it also has a xox style interface, which i grew up using and so is very comfortable to me.

you can tweak more, with the same CC>q link setting, just one at a time, if recored you can move on to other.

yes, 3 per pad, with simult option up to 15 on this OS
can we tweak the sample start on all layers at once then switch between layers all with cc?
q-link works as per pad inculding layers, or per track > whole program with layers, switching between layers can be done only thru velocity (can be done from q-link on already recored tracks or while recording)
and then of course directly control the filter and cutoff with independent cc's
yes, but in non-channel operation only on one track at a time, again, if recored you can move on

don't have it, but is this lock is something like: if you select loop from step 3 to 13 it will play broken rythym in sync? right? I guess you have to check yourself how does it work in real.

I love this feature. I've set the Mod wheel on my MPK25 to act as Q1 on my 1000 and I've been having a great time. When an MPC track is set to MIDI mode and then you go to Grid edit mode (MODE + Pad15, then press Shift+F1 to get to the various MIDI messages), it makes setting CC values so fast and easy. I'll change CC numbers with the data wheel, then make the adjustments with the mod wheel of the MPK. Sure beats using the dinky little slider on the MPC.

no, parameter locks work like this:

for external midi tracks, the monomachine allows you to specify up to 4 continuous controllers per track that you can then step write with each note. when it gets to your note, each cc is sent out to your slaved gear. this allows for some interesting pattern building. not that it is very different from other sequencer's cc automation protocols, but it exists within a step writing paradigm, making it unique among step sequencers in its price range. elektron makes serious gear with many capabilities other gear just doesnt have. its like a cross between boutique and consumer gear.

ok so i have only 1 track on the mpc 1000 with real time control, as sequenced externally. ok that will get me by until i open my akai s2300 up and start using it.

am i correct in assuming that i can only apply cc > q-link > S.Start to tracks that are recorded to the mpc's sequencer? meaning i cant choose what start offset using cc messages and then trigger a note all with external input? just checking.

No they should work anyway, but from what I noticed some time ago it works OK on drum type programs only, there is something wrong with INST programs.. about that

I can't check right now, but even if it does not work today.. it's possible it will work next week.. welcome to the world of jjos

BTW do you have OS updated to 3.41?

Works fine here receiving both CC> s.start & note from external controller. Make sure you're sending on correct input in "button" page.

ok maybe im not understanding how youre doing it... can you please explain step by step?

you say youre sending cc > q-link > s.start and a midi note, and youre able to get the sample start to jump around for the note played?

:hmmm: from memory:

mode 9:
multi OFF
receive channel > ALL

button:
input 2 on channel 16
set CC 15 to q-link 1

load a drum kit and set it up to any track
mode 1
set q-link 1 to S. start 0-100

on controlller pluged in to IN2:
set a knob to transmit as CC/ channel 16/ parameter 15

on mpc turn after key to light on

press the key (sends note) on a controller, spin the knob.. ready :-D

also: check on MIDI monitor (mode 9) what are you sending

thank you.

i had multi on.

i think its creating a pause when i send the cc value because i think it gets sent at the same time as the note. i may have a loop thats not perfectly trimmed. itll take a little tweaking i think.

i can see now that ill need to make chops after all... something i was trying not to do. im sure it will yield a better result anyway. i was just trying to get away with using 1 pad instead of many... you can trigger the sound less that way too so you know whats going on easier. sort of. you get my drift im sure.

im just trying to find out where the limits are with regard to programming this thing outside of its own facilities. since its so good at capturing midi, i figure ill eventually transfer the pattern over to the mpc after its developed.

it would be nice to be able to use the 16 pads built into the mpc to set 16th notes on and off in a 4 measure step sequencing environment... seems logical just looking at the device. and that big aftermarket screen? ooh man what a machine that would be!
