Samples sound different once in a track

Before starting a project, I load some samples and in the load screen, for example :
(from the OS2XL manual)

But to decide which sample, I usually play them before loading and assigning to pad, by pressing "PLAY". Then it seems to me that these samples sound "better" or clearer or louder ... than latter, when they are used in a track with other tracks playing along. It is as if in a track(s) with all the other samples also playing they get a bit muddied compared to how they sound separately, alone, before loading/assignment.

Is this a false impression due to the sample being in track and with also all the other samples playing at the same time in the other tracks ??

It's normal.
That's why it's important to choose samples that sound good when they play together from the beginning. It's also the reason why the mixing step of your project is important. You can try to fix that kind of issue afterwards.

On my 1000 Its the same thing. When I hit play, it sounds loud as hell. When I assign it to a pad, put the setting on full level, it's still not as loud as it was when I hit the play button after I take the sample. It seems to play louder in the sample edit screen too.

I think you should set 127 in track mixer (OUT tab in program) to do that

Yeah that's a known issue. JJ never managed to make the level coherent between all the different modes (load/ trim...etc) Too many parameters btw.
