INST Program with Portamento note on problem

Hi all!
First post here, just been getting into using my 1000 for a new live setup and have run into an issue when trying to get portamento happening on an instrument program.

Portamento works normally but when it's on I can't play the same note more than once in a row. It's as if with portamento on the note on message doesn't trigger unless it's different from the previous note. Seems like a really strange feature or straightforward bug, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this?

I have been doing a bit more digging and found this topic from 2014:

It's on 3.37 and the convo ends with saying it's getting fixed in the update that year (2014).
Can't figure out why it's still there in 3.53.
