First off, just want to preface my message by saying that I've read through the FAQs and have searched some threads and still not clear on what to do, which is why I'm asking here. I have a black MPC 1000 that I bought used in 2010 that has JJ OS 1.49. I never bothered upgrading it, and after not using it for a while I'm wanting to get back into it, and want to know if it's a good idea to upgrade to the latest JJOS? I went to the JJ site and noticed there is a version that was released in October, is this the one I should go with? Are there any issues I can expect to encounter once I upgrade? Like I said I've only used the one OS that was on it when I bought it. I believe I can switch back and forth between different OS' if I need to, but not sure if this is useful or recommended? I appreciate any insight, and I hope I'm not out of pocket by asking such a newbie question. Thanks.

You can always swap between JJOS version without any problems. You can try out the latest JJOS for free to see if it’s to your liking. Download and install it, and you can do everything except saving.

Thank you! I’ll do that. Meant to say I’m using JJOS 1 version 4.99

Just to be sure. Were you talking about upgrading to a more up to date JJOS1 version? Or updating to another JJOS all together?

I want to upgrade to whatever is considered the most recent update.

I'm on JJOS OS2XL.

Haven't gone to OS3 yet.

OS3 sacrifices some features of OS2XL that I didn't want to give up. I weighed the pros and cons of it. Can't remember the details of my decision. Here: http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/os2xl_os3.htm

Going from OS2XL to OS3 you sacrifice:

PATCHED PHRASE
Auto Chop (TRIM)
Program for Musical Instruments (Overlap)
Grid Edit (AUDIO)
Simul Pad 1 (Pad of a target is also recorded as an event at the time of recording.)
CHOP in Q-Link NOTE ON
LFO SPEED in Q-Link REAL TIME
TEMPO in Q-Link REAL TIME
Pitch Bend Sensitivity
MIDI IN (MIDI CC #01 Modulation wheel)
Pad Aftertouch (Program mode)
Sample Layer Crossfade
Line Pattern (GRID)
Hold of a note repeat pad
Loop hold playback of a sample
The value and mixer of a parameter of FX2 are controllable by a MIDI controller.
Customize of MAIN and NUMERIC button
Two or more sample assignment (Audio Track)
Track Velocity%
Simul Sequence (2nd Sequence)

But with OS3 you GAIN the following features that are absent in OS2XL:

EXCLUSIVE SOLO&EXCLUSIVE MUTE (Track Mute Group)
Repeat hold playback of a sample
The value of a note repeat which is different in each pad can be set up.
AHDSR
Tracks Edit Mode
Detune (INST PROGRAM [PITCH]) Reference video
INVERT (TRIM)
Voice Priority (PROGRAM)
MIDI FILTER
Copy Bank
LFO Pan (PROGRAM)
Seq.Loop SPP (Sync out)
LR of a stereo sample is changed. (TRIM)
TEMPO button (TRIM) The tempo of a phrase sample is detectable. Reference video
Random of arpeggiator
The value of CC is controllable by the pressure of a pad. (Pad Mode)
Reversal of LCD can be performed.
HOLD button (PROGRAM) Reference video
Retrigger field to LFO (PROGRAM) Refer to manual. Reference video
FOOTSWITCH (NEXT BANK, BACK BANK) Reference video
View (LOAD)
Real-time Time stretch / Pitch shift Reference video
TRANSPOSE in Q-Link REAL TIME
Improved mode (RECORD)
Chord (Chords can be directly assigned to pads by a MIDI keyboard)
Start offset of a sample (Audio Track)
Simul Pattern
Repeat hold solo playback of a sample
Non-Destructive Slice and Start/End point adjustment of a sample (Program mode)
Pressure (MAIN) The value of a TUNE, FILTER and LFO is controllable by the pressure of a pad.
TRANSPOSE (Pad Mode) The value of a transpose can be set to pads.
Test mode of a button and LED Reference video

And now there's an even newer version of OS3 that adds even more features.

I might have to re-evaluate whether or not to install OS3 over OS2XL.

I like the real time chopping in OS3 and the note on indicator in the track mute screen.

Real Time time stretching via the Q links in OS3 looks like a nice feature too.

I am curious what the 'Non-Destructive Slice and Start/End point adjustment of a sample (Program mode)' feature is in OS3.
