who is still using step edit and why?

quick question. i have stopped using step edit altogether in favor of the grid. i do all my recording in grid edit.

who still uses step edit and why do you use it instead of the grid?

ah, rather than going through all pad banks/qlink screens. that makes sense.

at this point that seems to be a good use of step edit. i don't use program changes or track mutes, so i didn't think of that use.

I use step edit to nudge and edit events (i do delete and move around single events a lot).
I have tried grid edit mode a few times, but I don't find it friendly at all. I thought it would be useful for simple edits (cut/paste a group of events e.g) but I must be too stupid to make it work for me. I usually go through SEQ EDIT tools instead.
The features of the JJ OS I use most are:
mode PAD11 (great - I love the autochromatic thing. I only wish it gave control to other parameters, such as sample volume, velocity to filter/envelope settings)
sample CHOP functions

step is a nice overview of all track activity and nice and clean ( pad mutes etc etc ) and although i would like to switch completely to GRID, i just feel its not complete enough, there is alot in GRID thats just not "flowy" if you know what i mean its a little messy, nothing specific just overall

they GUI of GRID needs a overall, like small things the position time is small it should be in place of tempo, why do we need tempo in GRID anyway i adjust tempo once at start of my projects in MAIN and thats about it, it really just steals space and clutters GRID, as well as loop i really dont see the need to have it in GRID, there is alot more important features that require that real estate, its just not got a clean flow in my option yet

I work mostly wit timing off and in Step Edit its easy to shift a couple tics. In grid edit wit TC off its too much....+ Im used to it.

i seized onto grid edit really quickly. i think it's great.

what i do wish is that you could set TC off and still view grid edit at different resolutions than 96 ticks. that would increase the grid's value by a factor of n, n being how much weed i'd consumed

but i use the qlink sliders to compensate and do the equivalent of step edit deep editing. goes real smooth and is good especially for drums.

The grid is poorly documented and has a cool-looking but opaque interface. The documentation says F4 will delete the event you've aimed at. But it really doesn't.

The worst thing is that JJ has introduced bugs into the step edit. Pastes don't work and sometimes I make a timing change that adds or deletes an old event.

I'm with Freezerman, I just haven't really figured it out, or spent the time to figure it out...

So Ant, what do you do with the qLinks in grid edit?

I like the type of grid edit/programming in my rm1x (trx0x style),
or even the gameboy nano loop has a pretty awesome grid style,
which considering the mpc's 16 pads would be dope.


I guess for the most part, I don't really do a lot of editing on my mp, just live recording so it hasn't been a priority to figure out. But after all your praise of grid edit, I think might be sleeping on some wicked shig... just need to figure it out.

Step edit for managing track mutes is a nessesity.

I use Step Edit. I dont see how you couldn't have used it...when there was no Grid Edit.. so I'm just still used to it i guess.. ive been into Grid Edit a few times..kinda seems crazy in there haha. i havent spent so much time.. i click everything once .. checked the new midi screen... i will probably use that sometime soon....
but yea NYM.. what do you do in grid edit with Q-link?
might be offtopic.. can someone explain wusup with q-links in Trim because mine always seems buggy or i dont know how to use it. if no reply..ill probably just figure it out myself... but lemme know what you guys are doin with the q-link these days.

you have to hit delete.

it sounds like people don't quite know how to operate grid edit. the reason why it's particularly powerful is the fact that you can see so much more at one time, move them with efficiency and easy, and overdub events wit different timing til you get something that sounds the way you want it.

there's nothing other than mutes that you can't do in grid edit better and faster IMO once you get used to it. the qlinks are ultimate for placement. i usually set number 2 to swing and play the pattern straight, and then go back and overdub in swing differences so the swing is not always applied at the same percent. this give s a dynamic timing and groov rather than one which always hits the same markers

Same here.
I also find the parameter/mode orientation in Grid mode a bit messy. Presing this, pressing that, shows that, shows this. Perhaps I´ll grow into it if I fiddle with it more, but right now I fell Step Edit is much faster with a better overview.

you most definitely will. my fingers move so fast i dont even know how i access what screen, but if i need it it's there before i even realize it.

i use step edit ever since akai created it in 2.10..... I dont mind the grid but i rather use my ears w/ tc off



one day ill give grid edit a shot. find out what im missing. but to remove step edit altogether is crazy. It would be like cutting my right hand off!
