project folder example of some tricks

yo just got off the mpc after the first happy session in a while, thoroughly enjoyed this time around and it figures that i have to wake up early tomorrow morning.

anyway, here's a link to a zipped prj folder i made, complete w/ everything. it's just an 8 bar loop at this point, but it demonstrates some cool tricks i've been talking about, as well as my use of the grid edit.

also uses WSLs (check out the simult layer of pad A11 of the DRUM program). i've taken a noise sample and simulted it to my hat as a layer, but left it w/ a NOTE ON and an LFO that sine wavs the volume so it sounds like a shaker. this is a very useful technique for some cool hat effects.

also, all of the drum samples and the lead instrument samples came from VHS tapes of all things, i really like the sound of em. i was really surprised by how good the drums sounded straight off the tape. the bass is maelstrom and a stray oneshot here and there came from my pc somewhere

nice. the drums are sampled on a mpc, to vcr and then back to mpc?

upon disecting i did notice a phatness from these vhs samples... im going to have to find some of my own..

crates - the drums are actually sampled FROM vhs, so it's vhs->mpc not on mpc->vhs->mpc.

i got a tape of this drummer just playing different rhythms. WONDERFUL sound, great for chopping.

yo nym, just loaded it a few minutes ago. dope beats and kits, bro. i'm having fun coming up with all sorsts of beats off the top of my head with these pgms. very flexible sample kits. good lookin' on that!

hey nym do you use plugins or a pc for your samples?

alien, i'm not sure i understand you. if you're talking about effects like eq etc i use plugins in ACID pro, but this beat has not been effected at all really. a couple of the lead melody samples were sampled into the sp404 and given a little tail w/ reverb and some crystal with lofi (A01 of the instrument pgm) but otherwise they haven't really been to my pc.

how do you like the layout of the drum pgm? i tap out a quick beat using A01, A11, and A05 and then go back in and individually set the layer using qlink. allows for a varied sound while still using pad real estate effectively. note that i never have to stray into grid B-D, only A.

lots of reasons. 1, it lets me work predominantly in 8th note res while in grid mode, 2, it doubles my resolution (96 ppq turns into 192 ppq), 3, the click in when recording is half as short. i'm an impatient guy.

THATS WASSUP THAT YOU TOOK OUT THE TIME TO SHOW US SOME OF YOUR WORK!!! I HAVE A QUESTION, WHAT A GOOD PRACTICE METHOD WHEN STARTING TO USE GRID EDIT? I REALLY WANT TO LEARN THIS GRID EDIT!!!

i always save entire mem (prj folder) whenever i make a beat.

as for learning grid edit, it's really not difficult at all. just start doing everything in there... no trick really, it's just a different (better) way of viewing stuff.
