When chopping up samples you can use the Q-link slider to adjust start and end points now? Cause now with the Akai OS I have to put in numbers cuz using the data wheel is soooo slow.

not in slice mode, but you don't need to because the new trim/slice mode moves not in increments of 1, but in percentage increments depending on your zoom

ie zoom all the way out = largest increments
zoom all the way in = smallest increments.

this is ideal because as you zoom further in you can adjust accordingly. very nice feature.

ah, very nice...

but, when i'm in edit mode (regular akai os) and have the zoom options, the "wave" form of the sound is really... off... very little detail.

is it like that on the new os as well or can you actually see it?

i find it to be pretty damn useable, i mean...i'm used to reading wave files with my eyes, it's no real talent but i (and undoubtedly many others here) could slice a drumbreak perfectly without listening to the file at all just by looking at the waveform and picking out transients. you can even use the waveform to distinguish note changes in a sample w/ no attack, like a legato violin phrase

vertical zoom makes the job a piece of cake. before vertical zoom was on the 1k i did my chops by ear only.. its good to have the visual piece of mind sometimes.

in all the akai OSes you could make the data wheel move through the sample faster by changing which digit the cursor was on before you dial it.

in 1.07, the further out you're zoomed, the more useless the waveform overview is (it wasn't drawing itself very accurately).

the overview in 2.10 is much better in this regard, but it's slower with a big sample.

the thing that ant mentioned with JJ (zoom level affecting data wheel increments) i HATE. it's probably my number one most hated new feature w/ JJ. i can see why one might like it, but to me it means that i HAVE to zoom in and out a zillion times, whereas before if i didn't need to see something i'd just adjust it numerically.

I think you're wasting your time zooming in and out. Use your ears, use what sounds best, the listener is not concerned. If in doubt, cut a little bit early, you can always trim the individual sample later.
IMO, if you're ultra concerned with chopping perfectly and accurately to the sample, use a computer. MPC is a drum machine first and foremost.
My two.

hey Dahk, i agree with you. i'm not sure if you were responding to me or not, but i will say that's exactly what i don't like about JJ. if you want to use your ears and just tweak a start point a bit, you HAVE to be zoomed in otherwise you can only move it in large jumps. know what i'm saying?

yall are crazy, get used to it. it's way quicker/more accurate than 1, chopping by ear, and at least way quicker than chopping on a computer

Hey all,
Yeah, I like the fact that it jumps in large increments, I think the chopping is dope. I was saying that zooming in is basically useless, just use your ears, save time and button presses, get your sound isolated and make some music.
Say you have five slices, if you're on slice three and you hear the beginning of slice four, you know that slice four is coming in too late, so nudge the start point back and hit slice three again. I don't see the value in using a microscope, this is hip hop music, the waveforms are just a guide, the ear is the one that knows whats up.
Disclaimer - just got JJ OS 4 last week, just auto-chopped for the first time last night, was playing around with one bar drum loops. So far I think this feature is amazing.

ant, i dunno. i got real used to hearing like, when i needed to move it by 100 samples vs. when i needed to move it 1000 samples. know what i mean? now if i want to move something a small amount, and it's a large sample, i have to zoom in, otherwise every click of the wheel is too much movement. that's all i'm saying. it amounts to taking a feature away, which i am bummed about.

but i may eventually just give in and grab the JJ, it seems mad not to.
