JJ OS 5: MIDI Program Change Menu

The new MIDI Program Change Menu now assigns actual names (Grand Piano, Brite Piano, Gunshots, Slap Bass 1, etc) to Program Changes. This is interesting. So far you can not edit the names, which would be great because the MPC 3000 has a similar function (which is dislayed from the main menu).

Fully implemented, it could be possible to store the names of patches to specific combinations of MSB/LSB settings. Also, it could be possible to import patch scripts like software based sequencers

As someone who never uses General Midi stuff, it annoys me that so many manufacturers feel the need to put GM names in everything, especially in a drum machine!

J - it's a nice idea, but of course you'd have to distinguish between different hardware aswell. Obviously the names for one module/keyboard/synth are completely different to another one connected to a different midi port/channel.

What I was thinking is that since all companies that produce Multi-timbral synths assign specific MSB/LSB settings to each of their synths (so far, I haven't come across a newer synth that had the exact setting of another)...the names would be specific to those settings. So MSB/LSB setiing of 87/60 would show (Piano1, Slap Bass 2, Sax)...an MSB/LSB setting of 87/61 would show (Brass, Trumpet, Strings...)

That's not true. For example, both my DSI Evolver and my SE ATC1 just use LSB0-3 to switch banks. They both ignore the MSB. This is quite common (and neither of them are that old).

Apart from that, what if you had more than one of the same synth/module?

The way most DAWs solve this is to setup the DAW so that it knows that the Evolver is connected to a certain port/channel. Then is uses a script to assign patch names. I can't see that happenening in the MPC, although JJ is a clever bugger, so you never know

I was talking about my experiences with multi-timbral synths. The ones that do use MSB/LSB settings with numerous banks of sounds and different expansion boards like the Roland (JV, XV, Fantom), Yamaha (Motif), Korg (Triton), Emu (Protues 2000) sound modules. All have specific settings to recall certain patches. These modules are more common/more popular..IMHO.
