I was looking at the Specs for the processor used in the 1000 and found this info...

Scroll down the list to the Serial I/O (SIOF) column and you'll see the following...

* Synchronous 16 step, 8/16/32 bit word FIFO for transmission/reception
* Supports 8-bit/16-bit mono/stereo sound playback or recording
* DMA can be transferred
* Supports frame sync signal

JJ, you can do it! :)

Think of how dope the Linn 9000 sounds with it's 8-bit sampling (I've witnessed it myself, btw).

but, why? cant you make your 16 bit samples sound like 8 bit?

Why? because it's suported by the processor and 8-bit sampling sounds dope!
Sure I can resample through other 8-bit samplers, but it's more convenient having it right in the 1000, which I can take anywhere with me and not have to bring out anything else for that purpose. :idea:

youre saying that the processor can do 8 bit... but can the ADCs?

why dont you get an old 8 bit digital delay and sample through it? that way you got your 8 bit without having to implement something new in the os...

i personally think its not necessary. theres plenty of ways to make your samples sound like 8 bit.

Not sure about the converters. Gotta look into it more. Maybe with some coding, re-sampling internally could still be an option.

The 8-bit digital delay idea is cool. I have a Casio SK-1 which has an 8 bit sampler as well. But as I mentioned before, I'd rather have the option to sample or re-sample 8 bits internally without having to bring anything else out with me.

I see nothing wrong with implementing something new to the OS. Are you worried about false claims that the OS has become bloated by other new features? There's no need to worry, since JJ continues to work out whatever issues happen to come about. Don't subscribe to Chicken Little's "The Sky Is Falling" mentality. :wink:

The specs state the following...

A/D converter (ADC)
* 10 bits ± 4 LSB, 6 channels
* Conversion time: 10 μ s
* Input range: 0-Vcc (max. 3.6 V)

D/A converter (DAC)
* 8 bits ± 4 LSB, 2 channels
* Conversion time: 10 μ s
* Output range: 0-Vcc (max. 3.6 V)

So the A/D converter is 10 bits and the D/A converter is 8 bits.
Despite the difference, a reduced bit-rate still seems possible with the proper coding.

so its convenience thats high on your list? i guess so.

consider this: 8 bit sampling only sounds right if youre using native 8 bit ADCs. any conversion is going to sound like a decimation plugin. if youre infatuated with the 8 bit sound of yesteryear, your best bet is to buy something from the era.

It's not just convenience.. it's the possibility that 8 bits can be implemented due to the hardware specs as well.

I have a Casio SK-1 to resample through 8 bits, and an Akai s950 for all my 12 bit needs. I'm sure the MPC1000 will sound much different. Whether you think it gonna sound like a decimation plugin or not is yet to be seen (or heard for that matter).... so again, it's gonna sound different... maybe better, maybe not. I'd rather know than speculate, as well as having a different flavor right inside the unit. That's more to experiment with in conjunction with all it's other sonic capabilities :idea:

It's not a bit "reduction" effect. It's a "bit grunger", which in the manual states that it's merely a distortion effect.
Given what's been stated in the manual, the "bit grunger" should be revamped into a real distortion, consisting of: volume gain, low/high/mid frequencies, and a distortion amount level. :idea:

i would much prefer optional sample rates, 8bit 12bit, more 12bit than any thing else.
