the only thing that the Akai OS has that I want it the display of the file size in the Load/save screen. So when I save a project I know the size of it and if I purged the sample i didnt want. Or is there a way I can do that on the JJ? Let me know peeps!!!!!

What do we need to do? Collectivley email JJ?

By truvc Tue May 01, 2007 9:01 pm
i reckon it is too late.
Impossible, since OS memory is filled.
The addition of a function cannot be performed.

Darn, well is there anything on there that most people don't really use, like autochop or something? Can't we ask JJ to get rid of that or something else?

I would say that it's not worth removing autochop just to see file sizes. Even if nobody uses it, it's much more useful than just seeing the filesize - you can see in the load screen how much memory you are currently using / how much is available. That's good enough for a rough estimate.

Not that necessary, true, just wondering why it was removed (ok maybe for space on the load screen).
For this OS i just wish some small workflow enhacnements , a more congruent userinterface (i´ll write some about that soon) and complete bugfreeness. Then we can talk about a new OS with more powerful features and without useless stuff like pp or autochop

But if nobody uses it and everyone would use The file size display (by default), you dont think it would be worth it? Really? It would help people save space on their HD's and CF's. I think thats a good thing.

All this talk of taking features out is silly.

As long as the features in question can be made to work properly, there is no reason to remove anything.

Not enough memory for new stuff? Use the old .bos method and start loading the OS from the flash card. You might lose sample time if you make it much bigger, but hey that's the way it goes.

Even if things don't go that way, the first thing I would rather see is a new streamlined version with all the old programming silt (read: Akai legacy code) removed. It would be interesting to see how much space could be freed up just by doing that. You could probably get better performance, too.

I got you. I just want to see the file size, thats all. And would you enlighten me on this .bos? I'm not familiar with this. I'm not sure how to load stuff off the flash memory. I dont mind losing a lil sample time, i've got too much as of right now. But I would like to know how to do that though.

Sorry that was a little vague especially for people who haven't been following JJ for awhile.

The way the first JJ systems worked was that first a special version of the Akai OS with a little bit of extra code tacked on was installed onto the machine (V1.07ex). The extra code allowed the option of loading an alternative operating system from the flash card in the form of a .bos file at startup.

Naturally, JJ would have to release a new version of the OS using the original loading system, so this isn't something you can do right now. However, if you can find a copy of 1.07ex and the three alternative .bos systems (MS1000, WP1000, VC1000) you can see how these old systems worked. You basically just hold one of the buttons at powerup to tell the machine which OS to load.

The advantage is that you've got all the space on the CF to store the OS instead of the limited internal memory. Of course if it's larger than the internal memory version, it will take up more space in RAM when it's loaded on, hence the loss of sample time.

Oh, ok. I got you. Thanx for breaking that down my friend. I'm new to the MP and JJ so i was like "huh?" That would be cool, load it from the CF?! NICE!!! Well, hopefully we can get this thing sorted out. The 4.64 just got posted! Let's see what JJ got for us this time! How can I know what he added or fixed if I'm new to the JJ OS?
