Another reason I use JJ OS - auditioning samples

I did my patriotic duty and installed Akai 1.23 just to see if the bugs were gone. Well, I'm back, after finding that the "freeze on new folder" and "midi muting which doesn't" are still there. But a new one: auditioning samples off my hard disk are dull and muffled in Akai OS and good with JJ OS.

Listening to individual kick drum samples with lots of low sine wave, the attack is softer and duller with Akai OS, although once loaded it sounds almost identical to the original sample in Sound Forge on the PC. In JJ OS the audition is as good as the loaded sample, in fact there's the slightest extra bright click at the beginning but the auditioned sound is much closer to the loaded sample sound than Akai OS.

I'm afraid to say it, I think the JJ OS playback of the sample sounds is just that little bit closer to the Sound Forge playback. Yes, I know that puts me in the golden ears league of bigots, but I think there is some small eq-like difference in the overall sound between Akai and JJ. Its a very tiny difference and I don't see why that should be.

Yes, all effects are off and no, I don't need a straight jacket...

The top wave is an 808 style kick played with Akai OS and the bottom wave is the same project with JJ OS. No kidding, the same wave auditioned and played with Akai has a slow attack, but it is fine with JJ OS.

For a reality check, you most likely will never hear the difference except with this particular type of waveform - many kick drums have dead space at the beginning or don't start at a high level.

Interesting! Is this just when you audition the sounds, or does it stay that way when you sequence?

The slow attack is the way Akai OS plays back the kick drum when hitting the pads and playing a sequence. The attack is even slower (and very obvious) when auditing a sample in load mode - so slow that it is impossible to hear the initial click.

Don't believe me, try it for yourself! You will need something to record the output of the MPC and be able to view the waveform. My point is that you expect a sampler to play a waveform bit for bit, but in fact the MPC2500 doesn't unless you use JJ OS. JJ OS really seems to output the waveform exactly and the auditioning is excellent (actually it adds a bit of a click).

I also have a gripe with a DC click at the end of very short Psy Trance kicks - you need to insert 100ms of silence to the end of the kick to get rid of it. Frankly if I had known this before buying the MPC ...

Most disappointing for a unit which should be putting the Fantom X6 to shame.

Why is there always a click at the beginning of all my audio track recordings and then a short gap before the audio starts?
... and while I'm griping: I wish the time stretch functionality worked precisely... it's a **** pain in the ass baby

jimmie, you ought to record the MPC output and look at the waveform to know for sure. All I'm really saying is that the MPC doesn't necessarily play the sample as you expect it to.

Nice to hear that other people use the MPC for trance...
