New to MPCs, should I learn on JJOS or wait?

I'm new to MPCs, but very experienced in music production in general. PC based DAWS, keyboard workstations...etc.

So should I give myself some time on the Akai OS while learning, or just jump straight into JJOS?

I'm interested in the the JJOS' audio tracks and delay effects.

Also a few other questions:

1) Will a HD speed up sample load times over a CF card? If so, by how much?

2) I'm concerned about HD noise, both internal and external. Is this an issue?

3) Can the HD spin down when not being used? Or is it always on?

Yeah, I had the same question, but I just went right to JJ. It didnt cause any probs for me. Learned everything fine.

I agree, just jump right into JJ OS, there's nothing to lose and many things to gain. I only used Akai's OS for like a week before I switched to JJ.

If you've ever used any type of music hardware before then it should be no problem at all to catch on. If you haven't -- well, it still shouldn't be too difficult.

And yes, JJ OS will turn off your hard drive when it is not being used to. I've never experienced any noise issues with a hard drive but I doubt there is much speed difference. Only difference I have noticed is theres an additional second or two waiting for the hard drive to spin up every now and then.

I would recommend using a CF card for any programs you are going to be using often, and use the hard drive as a massive archive and just do 'SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY' every single time you make a beat. Doing that makes it the easiest to pick up where you left off

First off, Thank You everyone for keeping the forum together with tips n tricks, advice, referrals, loops, etc... You guys rock. I have been producing and reading this forum for 2 years and rarely posted. I am now because I can relate to this post and also I have decided to share as you have shared with me.

I have had the MPC1k with JJ OS before but sold it because I was lazy and didn't know Logic's Environment enough nor was I patient enough to learn nor RTFM. I know better now and am educating myself more and more due to forums like this, ebooks, books, other producers...

Anyway Vertical, I went straight to JJ OS since I repurchased the MP two weeks ago and I can assure you I will not regret it. I am producing 4 hot tracks/day that I would be time consuming in Logic. I have everything MIDI-ed up to mpc. The OS is easy lo learn. Everything is in front of you. There are couple functions that I haven't used yet or using in Logic already but it is priceless to me. $30 for what is offered to us is nothing compared to what the Jenius did/is doing. You won't regret it, you are not missing any features in Akai's OS.

Do not even cripple yourself with that lousy b-llshlt Akai OS. JJ is the way to go, man... for real. You won't regret it and you'll be really happy you didn't waste your time with the Akai OS.

I learned akai's 2.1 before i got jj. Everything I learned is still useful in JJ, but JJ adds a bunch of cool features to the 1000. Well worth learning. I don't think it really matters which you learn first.

I don't notice any noise from my HD, and it's well worth it, loads faster, no memory cards to deal with, everything is in one place always available..well worth it. I got the 80gig akai approved drive from vst. I don't know if it spins down, but I think it might, since it is a notebook drive. I'll check later.

Just picked up a 1000 thursday. Ditch the Akai OS. Get the jj, you'll thank yourself later
