whats good people?

i just integrated a little synth, a kawai k1, into the system.

the way its set up is midi is:

mpc midi in 2 to synth mdi out
mpc midi out b to synth midi in

so what i basically am trying to do is play something with synth while the mpc records the midi data. once the midi data is recorded, i can edit and record to an audio track. you all know the routine.

anyway, whats happening is when i press a key on the synth, it cuts samples, like it is set to mono on all channels. so i cannot play the synth and the mpc at the same time.

also it wont record midi, so either the mpc is not receiving data, or the synth is not sending.

i have tried all possible combos in the midi screen of the mp, and have changed midi channels and set the omni to on and off in the synth.

currently, the midi screen looks like this:

active receive channel: all (and i have tried to just use a single midi channel and it does the same thing)

soft through: off (ive tried all selections)

sequence program change: on (ive turned this off, no change)

pad to internal sound: on (i havent messed with this since it deals with the pads)

also, i can play the synth with the pads and record a sequence, i just can play the keys and record a sequence.

does anyone have any ideas? midi always throws me for a loop right when i think i have the hang of it.

thanks in advance

this is on all jj os' btw. im currently using 4.97. and i have tried it on 4.98.

Thats really strange. The mpc receives data but wont record it? The mpc also receives midi data only on the active track, so when theres no program selected this should really not happen.

i just can play the keys and record a sequence.

?? Please explain some more, is the synth seniding data or not?

that was a typo.

i got it so that now i can record midi on channels a, and playback on b. but if i play the keys, it cuts every other track. if i hit a key on the synth on time with the playing samples, it cuts them.

very strange and irritating

thanks for the reply

Do you mean the mpcs midi outputs?
Just to make this clear, theres:
MPC midi in 1 & 2
MPC midi out A & B
Each of theses can send/receive on 16 different channels (thats midi standard)

So i would seit it up like this:

Midi out Kawai -> midi in MPC
MPC set to "active track receive channel:all" and "Soft thru: as track"
Midi out mpc -> midi in Kawai
Set the track you want to record to to the appropriate midi channel (and output, of course)
On the Kawai there should be an option like the mpc´s "pad to internal sound", often called "local", turn that off.

Now you send the midi signals to the mpc, the mpc sends it right back to the Kawai which then should play the sounds.

Thats basically what you set it up already, just make sure that theres no program selected on the track (pgm:off) and you should be fine.

Hope this helps.

sounds like you have the Local On

this is from korgs as it saved me time writing it out - just find out how to turn Off Local on the K1

Q:
What is Local Control (or Local Mode On / Local Mode Off)?
A:
Imagine your synthesizer to be two separate units: the keyboard and the sound generation circuits inside. When you play a note on the keyboard, the keyboard sends data to the sound generator circuit so that it will produce the required sound. Also, a copy of this data is sent to the MIDI out socket. When you turn Local Control/Mode Off, the data link between the keyboard and the internal sound generator circuit is disconnected and data is only sent to the MIDI out socket. You may wonder what use this is, as your synthesizer will not play any sounds from the keyboard in this mode. It is very useful when using a sequencer to record a song track by track as it stops the internal sound generator playing when you are recording a different sound on another midi channel or track on the sequencer.

hope this solves the problem
