glitchy sample directory?

I'm running JJOS2 on my 1k and there seems to be a glitch in my sample folders-- instead of loading all the files in each folder and sub folder, the same first several samples are duplicated over and over. I've formatted my CFC, reinstalled the OS, and edited the folders via computer to check for errors (where all the samples show up as being on my card).. but the same thing just keeps happening over and over. Bass drum 01 has twenty copies, Bass drum 02 has twenty copies, Bass drum 03 has twenty copies, and none of the others load. All the files are displayed as having different sizes but they all are the same sample. Also I've made sure not to go over the 2gig read limit on CF. Lost on this one-- anyone know the solution?

Strange... just to clarify, you are saving each project in its own folder, correct?

Which OS version are you using?

Did you format your card using the MPC's FORMAT command or did you format it using your computer? You should be using the MPC to format.

Do you have another card to try? That way you could rule out a bad CF card.

Does this happen with all projects or just certain ones?

Are you keeping your filenames short?

Are you pressing load when on the folder, or are you loading the .PRJ file? I've never had trouble when loading the .PRJ file.


Those were just some things to try off the top of my head.

OS is JJ version 2.048. This is just for samples that I have imported to the unit... I have actually not even had a chance to make a project because I only have about 5 sounds despite using up 2 gigs.... I did format the card using the mpc itself, but I don't have another card to try. In regards to keeping the names short... they are not too particularly long.. but regardless they are all the same sound repeated over and over and over and over... very bizarre.... any other thoughts?

This concerns me.... what do you mean? Your CF card is duplicating the samples or they are being duplicated when you load them into RAM? You're confusing me.

well... I am not sure where they are being duplicated to be honest... let me try to clarify: in USB mode when I drag and drop a sample folder onto my CF card, it goes through the transfer process etc and from the computer I could then browse the card and see that the file has been completely transferred; each individual sound in the sample folder appears as being on the CF card. However, when I disconnect the usb connection between my comp and the mpc, then go to the load window on the mpc and browse the same folder.... it shows (and plays) all the samples that were visible on my CF card from my comp as being the same two or three samples duplicated over and over. Does that help at all?

also... I know that the .wav files in the sample library I am loading onto the mpc are themselves not corrupted because I can readily access and play all of them in my DAW...

aha! I think I might have pinned it down.... my CFC is type III, mpc only reads type I and II correct?

No such OS.

JJ version numbers for OS1 are either 1.xx, 3.xx or 4.xx

If you are using some version of OS2 remember that's still in beta and the version numbers have not yet gone over 0.xx.

Also, I've never heard of a type III CF, and according to the official CFA website at compactflash.org, they haven't either.

but make sure your file lengths are not too long
if you have lengthy file names, all the files will appear as a list of a single file (each will play the same file)

hmm yeah I don't think the file lengths are too long considering that each is just a single hit... but I'll mess around with that and see if it makes a difference. In regards to the CF III I don't know what the deal is... but what I do know is that my card is a CF III and I remember reading somewhere that mpc only accepts type II and I. Oh and to clarify... yeah I am using the beta version of OS2... 4.084

sorry, i meant to say file name lengths, not the actual physical size/length of the wav.

oh wait, so if the actual sample name is too long then the library will glitch out as you described?

Ahem...

I know this is an older post, but I've been having similar problems. Does anyone know exactly how many characters can be in a file name so I can avoid this problem when I'm organizing new drum kits?
