So i just got a new mac, and it came with garageband, so instead of using crappy old audacity as my DAW i am using garageband now, because garageband 08 has added effect automation. This means that any parameter within an effect applied to a track can be "automated" or it can be "drawn" onto the track using nodes where you want that parameter to increase, decrease or where you just want the effect to be applied. This is not a new idea and it has been implemented in Pro Tools, Logic, etc etc.

So this got me thinking about what if JJ could implement automation into the mpc. And the addition of the track mixer makes this even easier to implement. I was thinking some sort of "track" grid edit. where you can view the entire track with time markers, where you can "draw" on nodes of increases or decreases of a parameter of the effect that you have applied to that track, panning of the track, or volume of the track. I don't know if the effect buses are capable of doing so, but if so, this would be amazing. Because i know for me, i try to do as much as possible on the mpc alone and try to truncate the computer from the process.

Just my ideas for the track grid edit:
*it would be absolutely wonderful to be able to have a wave form rendering of the audio of the track, but my inclination tells me that this is way to processor intensive for the mpc to do.
*You could either apply a timing correct grid to this view in any of the standard divisions (1/8, 1/8 triplet, 1/16, 1/16 triplet etc etc) or just turn it off, which would be more useful because you would have more of a decision where you want the node you are placing to appear.
*If at all possible, to be able to have filters automated. So you could automate filter sweeps, i am doing this a lot in GarageBand, for example, the resonance of the filter rising from 0 to 100 over a period of time and at the same time having the cut off frequency dropping from 100 to 0. This creates some pretty damn cool sounds and is a technique that is wonderful to use.
*I was thinking that this could be a mode accessed through the track mixer so something like enter track mixer (mode+pad 4), highlight the track you want to automate, hit window and then like f1 to enter automation grid edit mode. From there you could choose the parameter you want to automate and then all you would do is use the data wheel to locate horizontally the point on the automation line where you want a node placed, then use the up and down arrow keys to locate where on the y axis you want the node to be placed.

This of course is just a general design that i had in my head and of course this may be too intensive of an action for the machine to complete. But I just wanted to put this idea out there for other people to see and maybe if someone know more about the actual limitations of the hardware inside the mpc, i.e. the speed of the processor, if the effect buses can single out parameters, etc, that would be a great piece of information to know, because if there is a general consensus that this will be useful and possible on the machine, I will email JJ as a feature request. And of course if anyone didn't catch on I am talking about OS2 because of the use of the track mixer, and this could also be used with ADSR, this really adds a ridiculous amount of power to MPC and makes it pretty much a DAW, with less effect processing power.

Below is a picture of a GarageBand project that i am working on with a pan automation line applied to it. Just for a visual example if somebody doesn't know what i am talking about.

i have also thought of a graphical representation of the track, but i bet that would be too intense for the mpc's processor to handle...

yeah nym i have seen the q link grid edit, and its damn useful. I just thought that in the form of an automation line with nodes would be more useful, or at least for me. And you can only do q-link grid edit with parameters that can be applied to the slider. So i just thought it would be a lot more useful and more easy to use to do what i have suggested.

also i just went and messed around with q-link grid edit for the first time in a while and i remembered why i don't use it anymore. I tried to do something like i described, a reverse fade between resonance and cutoff frequency. and it is very buggy and doesn't work. it takes events and moves them randomly. I just think if an entire new mode was developed with an automation line (if you haven't noticed that is what i am really pushing for) and the time was put into making it perfect, it would be just that perfect. And i think instead of trying to develop a new way of applying automation changes, just model it after something that has been in use for quite some time, an automation line.

I totally agree with automated filter sweeps
Its something I use nonstop with softsynths doing the res and cutoff
exchanges
What I do now though is in Guru put samples in at the same bpm as the
beat and then record the outs from my soundcard into the mpc
then I have the whole sample filter sweeped as neccessary as a .wav
If you could record your outs from garageband into the mpc
and just use the samples it would solve a lot of problems
I find that the more raw processed .wavs I use and the less messing with
options the more creative I am

yes you can do that, but then you can't go back and adjust parameters. you have to re record the sweep with your new parameters.
