Bug Fixes: OS2 Ver1.04 01-ARP-2008
-------------------------------------------
1.[SEQUNCE PLAY]

Change of a PAD to note number will not PLAY a sequence
at the time of Track type = MIDI.

2.[TRIM]

[Level zoom]
SHIFT+UP/DOWN ==> UP/DOWN
Cursor move to upper field was changed into [SHIFT]+UP cursor.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That level zoom thing was bugging me. Glad they changed it.

ahhhh, thank you...these are both wonderful.

if 1 is what i think it is, this now means that i can reassign midi note numbers in MIDI tracks to rearrange them in MGE!! all my drum sounds (arranged vertically) can now be grouped, making them easier to view...formerly, if you changed a midi note in MIDI tracks and then recorded the pad whose note you changed, the result was that a different pad would play (the pad that was SUPPOSED to be midi note XX)

and the 2nd issue: SHIFT+UP/DOWN was awkward for a good deal many people. jj had this behavior in OS1 briefly, but then took it out again. i GREATLY prefer just hitting up/down to zoom in TRIM: it works that way in SLICE, why not TRIM?

HOWEVER, this is an issue of contention here: when i mentioned this to murai, he was concerned that changing this behavior would result in claims from other users who may prefer the alternate "shift+up/down" zooming in favor of accessing upper functions. if you are one of these folks, please speak up now: do you exist?

Checking the day I hope this isn't an April Fool's update ... restoring Akai OS v. 1 perhaps ... oh and cheers Nym for the program uploads!

yeah man, there are lots of em aren't there...
they make me wish i had the ability to edit multiple start/end points at a time, some have an irritating clicky sound when i'd prefer to build my own transient w/ adsr.

i know i could use qlink start point modulation, but i'm hesitant to give up my qlink note on data so quickly knawmeen

wait, so now instead of Shift + Up/Down for vertical zoom we need it to switch up and down between the sample name fields and the start/end point fields?

I don't know if I like that at all - I was kind of digging the Shift zoom thing after I started to get used to it

By dtaa pla muk Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:13 pm
but between the two options, one spends more time zooming due to the necessity of ZOOM to CHOP than moving up to the CHOP/ORG NOTE/etc row, yes?

yes, this is the way it is done now and the way it was done in os1.
there are 2 parameter rows in TRIM:

row 1 has the SAMPLE NAME, ORIGINAL NOTE, NDCHOP, and display of degree of vertical zoom

row 2 has sample start point, loop lock, loop point, loop style, and end point.

when trimming, row 2 is the one you want quick access to, while still being able to zoom vertical and horizontal.

in row 1, there's only 1 parameter you're gonna want to access while trimming: CHOP. and this, you only have to access one time. turn CHOP ON and then use the pads to select which non destructive chop you are currently editing the start/end point of.

ALSO, lesser known: to scroll thru your samples w/out entering sample list, move to start point and then hit LEFT cursor to move to sample name.

IMO, this current specification is the best throughout the history of jj os.

I don't remember there being any shifting going on in OS1 -- to get the the sample name field I thought you just had to scroll left as far as you could and then on the next left the cursor would jump to the sample name field

I actually think it should go back to SHIFT for vertical zoom and let you move freely to any field with the cursor keys, it just doesn't make sense to me that you should have to use SHIFT to move to a field on the screen, when the cursor keys are for exactly that purpose -- moving the cursor

ideally see there'd be some extra buttons located directly to the left of the data wheel for zoom in/out, but that's unfortunately note the case. i thought recently about whether zoom vertical/horizontal wouldn't be best attributed to the bottom left corner pads, A01 and A05 for vertical zoom and A02 and A03 for horizontal zoom. that way the cursors could be plainly for changing RANGE, and you could zoom even when up in the top row.

i rather like that idea, seeing as how when you're trimming your left hand is only performing 1 task: auditioning pads. that's a 1 finger job and we got a couple other digits. all who are interested, tell me what you think about this idea

however, change brings a "claim," or a complaint. after all, cursor up/down was always zoom, and when that was changed the first time, folks commented that this was awkward on the fingers compared to the older method. here, we have the older method, and some folks find that they preferred what THEY had grown used to

so often, the answer is "less resistance," figure out what function is use the most and present the least keystrokes to perform that task.

so i ask: which do you use more, when trimming:

1- view left/right, change org note, CHOP on/off
2- vertical zoom

follow the logic: the most frequent use of TRIM is of course "trimming," editing Start/End points. Since ZOOM is an integral part of editing these points, there should be very very quick access to that function.

there are numbers for instance in the exrta audio record time,as if theres an option to record longer than whats given.is this not possible,i did try to load in a bunch of things in at once and it did stop me at the 11min mark.does anyone have ideas around this to record live sessions longer than 11min stereo.

(once again,no vague or cocky responses please.thanks)

Glad to see post record t.c. and click volume back working. I prefer the new trim mode, although i agree its less logical,i feel it will speed up the chopping stuff, which im all for.

Other little workflow considerations:
Id prefer step edit to default to "note events" rather than "all events" when you enter it for the first time on a track. Its getting crazy in there with all that poly pressure data!

The GM list in GPE i feel is unneccesary,it clutters up the screen and bothers me on a pyschological level "general midi i hate you!!!" My hunch is that most people won't want to access that info on a regular basis and should be promptly hidden from sight so it doesn't offend my sensibilities. haha

other than that JJ keeps coming up with the goods, to think i was happy with gpe and qlink to track on, back in the early days.

something workflow related which is extremely cool , and that ive only just appreciated, is the way that grid edit pad pattern works in the "opposite direction".
In GPE if you select a pad that youve recorded in the normal way(i.e. not programmed via pad pattern), you can open the window on it to access and manipulate all the data while the sequence plays, very useful.

makes me wonder if jj's going to add "real time swing" one day, cause you can kind of do it on individual pads already by accessing the grid edit pad pattern.

my $30 seems better value every day...don't sleep on os2!
